    Bird-Hit Avianca Airlines Plane Returns to Bogota

    AviancaAvianca Airlines flight AV-241 had to return and make an emergency landing in Bogota, Colombia, on September 24th.

    The Airbus A319-100 plane took off for Santiago, Chile, but had to return shortly afterwards after one of the engines ingested several birds.

    The plane landed safely. All 118 people aboard remained unhurt.

    Where: Charleroi Airport in Belgium
    When: Monday March 16 2009
    Who: 157 passengers and crew
    Why: On approach to Charleroi Airport, the crew reported a problem with the braking system. The plane landed safely.

    Flybondi Plane makes Tail Strike in Argentina

    Flybondi flight FO-5450 made a hard landing on Cataratas del Iguazú International Airport, Argentina, on July 15th.

    The Boeing 737-800 flying from Las Heras, Argentina, had a tail strike while landing on the runway.

    The plane sustained minor damage.

    No injuries were reported.

    Dominican Republic Flight Cancelled with a Bang

    On a takeoff run, an Airbus 330 en route from Manchester to the Dominican Republic suffered an engine explosion.

    The pilot aborted the takeoff. None of the 325 passengers aboard the Thomas Cook A330 were injured.

    Passengers disembarked and the plane was inspected and for half an hour, the runway was closed. Emergency services were deployed.

    How passengers were accommodated was not released.

    UPS Plane Makes Emergency Landing in Cologne

    UPSUPS flight 5X-2 had to return and make an emergency landing in Cologne, Germany, on April 10th.

    The Boeing 747-400 cargo plane took off for Hong Kong, China, but had to return shortly afterwards after the crew reported that they had to shut down one of the engines.

    The plane landed uneventfully. All 3 crew members aboard remained safe.

    What: Aero Contractors Boeing 737-500 en route from Port Harcourt to Lagos
    Where: Nigeria
    When: Oct 24 2010
    Who: 84 passengers, 15 injuries
    Why: Passengers were complaining of pressure problems resulting in ear pain. Passengers reportedly “ran amuck” in the cabin when they saw smoke, apparently resulting in injury.

    Officially, ten minutes before arrival in Lagos, a smoke problem in the cabin was reported to ATC. The crew reported the smoke, and made a safe landing at Murtala Muhammed International Airport with emergency on standby at 6:30 pm. Passengers evacuated, resulting in fifteen injuries. Passenger’s luggage was not released until 8:30 pm

    According to maintenance, the smoke problem was mist and condensation from the air conditioning which had been switched to manual.
