    Ultralight Crashes in Tas


    On January 11, 2013 at 10:10 a.m., an Australian Lightwing GR 912 was in Yorktown Tasmania. The plane, an ultralight, took off and nosedived in a vineyard next door to the airport, killing the sixty-five year old pilot.

    The cause of the crash on a West Tamar property off Bowens road, just north of Launceston has not been determined.

    The Beaconsfield police responded to the scene.

    Gyro Crash in Australia Kills Unidentified Pilot, Student

    What: GT Gyroplanes Kruza
    Where: off Willis Road, near Mangalore Airport
    When: Jan 14, 2012, 12:30
    Who: pilot and student aboard, 2 fatalities
    Why: A local pilot reported that the ultralight crashed, looking as if it came straight down and smashed up. The wreckage was found in a paddock in a field. No one witnessed the crash, but at 10:00 someone witnessed the chopper being buffeted by “gale force” winds.

    The flight was discovered after it failed to return to the airport to pick up the next student.

    The wreckage is in several pieces. The gyrocopter broke up on impact. It had normally been used for training exercises. The Mangalore airport is in Australia.

    Crashed, Stolen, Force Landings on April 1 No Joke

    On April 1:

    • A privately owned Reims Cessna F172E with two aboard made an emergency landing in Nome, Norway after an engine failed. Neither of the two aboard reported injury.
    • An Ultralight suffered a mechanical failure in south Surrey, BC crashed and sustained damage. The pilot parachuted out into a field of blueberries, and was injured but survived.
    • The pilot of a Beech J35 Bonanza force landed in a cornfield in northwest Davenport, Iowa after the plane suffered a mechanical failure. THe plane was damaged. The pilot was not.
    • A privately owned Cessna 210H that took off from Bullo River Station with four aboard crashed near Cape Ford in Australia. The bodies of three of the four people aboard have been recovered. Those aboard were 45-year-old electrical contractor Stuart Sceney, his 53-year-old wife Karmi Dunn, and daughters Mekdes, 12, and Kal, 15. A search continues for the wreckage and the remaining passenger. Weather conditions hampered the search.
    • A Cessna 172 Skyhawk went down with engine troubles in Juneau County swamp, Wonewoc, Wisconsin. THe pilot Seth Pripps of Rockford, Ill was uninjured. Firefighters assisted.
    • A Caicos Express Airways Cessna 402C took off from and landed at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport and suffered a nose-gear collapse. The plane is registered to Turks and Caicos Islands. The pilot was uninjured.
    • A Cirrus SR22 was reported missing/stolen from Benton Arkansas. It was found abandoned in Casscoe Arkansas. On Monday night, the plane had been scheduled to land at Saline County Airport. When officers approached, the plane took off nearly hitting a deputy.

    Ultralight Pilot Walks Away from Crash

    On January 21, 2013, a Rotax 447 ultralight was flying, clipped treetops and crashed after takeoff.

    The pilot, Randy R. Roman took off at 2:45 pm and shortly later crashed on Mendoza road in Manatee County.

    The pilot was uninjured but the ultralight was a total loss. After crashing his homebuilt ultralight, reports say Roman called his wife and asked for his toolbox, without letting on anything was out of the ordinary.

    He attributed his crash to “the corrosive effects of ethanol in his fuel caused…the fuel cap to flake off into the tank and plug a fuel line.”

    Crash in Brazil Totals Ultralight


    On January 2, 2013, a Condor MB ultralight was over rural Luziânia Brazil when the engine shut down.

    The ultralight crashed in a forest and was damaged beyond repair.

    Pilot Alberto Rossi Junior, and his son Lucas Ferreira Rossi, survived, and were taken to a Brasilia hospital.

    Military police and the Fire Department respnded to the scene. The paperwork of the pilot and the plane is reported to be up to date.

    Florida Ultralight Lands Safely

    What: ultralight
    Where: 1500 block of Franklin Avenue, Ellenton,, Manatee County Fla
    When: 4:55 p.m.
    Who: pilot Kurt Pfister, 46, and passenger as Katie Kuss were not injured
    Why: The ultralight’s engine quit, and the plane made an emergency landing in the field. I the course of landing, the wheels struck power lines which took out electricity to ten homes; but the craft landed safely without injury to pilot or passenger
