    What: Etihad Airlines Airbus A330-200 en route from Kathmandu (Nepal) to Abu Dhabi
    Where: Kathmandu
    When: Jan 17th 2012 9:15 pm
    Who: 168 aboard
    Why: While taking off from Kathmandu, the engine developed problems. THe crew shut it down and returned within minutes to land at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu.

    Another source says the flight circled for an hour to burn fuel to lighten the landing.

    Passengers were provided accommodations. Etihad engineers from Abu Dhabi arrived to handle the problem on January 21.

    Qantas Flight Returns to Perth Due to Unusual Odor in Cabin

    QantasQantas flight QF904 had to return and make an emergency landing at Perth Airport, Australia, at 2:47 p.m. on December 8.

    The flight, heading from Perth to Karratha, had to return after an unusual odor was detected in the aircraft’s cabin.

    The Boeing 737, carrying around 85 people, landed uneventfully. St John Ambulance examined more than 75 people for smoke inhalation.

    The cause of odor is under investigation.

    Northwest Emergency Landing at Indianapolis

    What: Pinnacle Airlines Canadair CRJ-200 on behalf of Northwest Airlines, flight 9E-2515/NW-2515 from Oklahoma City,OK to Detroit,MI
    Where: Indianapolis
    When: Tuesday (3 minutes later)
    Who: 26 passengers on board
    Why: When cabin pressure problems were indicated (possibly originating with the seal around the aircraft’s windshield) the plane had to proceed with an emergency landing at the Indianapolis airport, where the plane taxied to the gate and were able to disembark normally.

    What: Pinnacle Airlines Canadair CRJ-200 on behalf of Northwest Airlines, flight 9E-2544/NW-2544 from Detroit,MI to St. Louis,MO
    Where: Indianapolis
    When: Tuesday (3 minutes earlier)
    Who: 18 passengers on board
    Why: Flight diverted when the window developed a crack

    Swiss European Airlines Flight Diverted to Stansted Due to Engine Fire

    A Swiss European Airlines flight LX-487 had to make an emergency landing at London Stansted Airport, after one of its engines caught fire.

    The plane was en route from London City to Basel on the night of Sunday April 27. During the initial climb, its right hand engine caught fire, after which the crew decided to halt the climb at the altitude of 5000 feet and shut down the engine. The plane was then diverted to the Stansted Airport, where it made an uneventful emergency landing, around 30 minutes after it took off.

    All 82 passengers and 4 crew members exited safely. The flight was cancelled and the passengers were accommodated in another flight from London’s Heathrow Airport.

    Far Eastern Air Transport Runway Overrun

    What: Far Eastern Air Transport McDonnell Douglas MD-82 en route from Taipei to Makung
    Where: Makung
    When: May 16th 2012, 10:45am
    Who: 165 aboard
    Why: On landing in Making in rain and wind, the plane exceeded a stop line on the runway which was abbreviated due to construction. Minimal damage occurred to the plane but runway lights were damaged.

    Although a Taipei news report calls into question the pilot’s braking, the weather and the fact that the runway was shortened due to construction should be mentioned.

    The Aviation Safety Council has begun an investigation into the incident.

    Delta Diverts to Dayton

    What: Delta/Comair Canadair CRJ-100 en route from Columbus, OH to Minneapolis, MN
    Where: Dayton
    When: Sep 16 2010
    Who: 50 aboard
    Why: After takeoff, the plane alerted that it developed engine problems. Pilots diverted the flight to Dayton, and made a safe landing.

    A few hours later, passengers were provided an alternative flight to Minneapolis.
