Skydiving Plane Crashes Electrical Cable Before Event


An Oulton Investments Pty Ltd Cessna 182A Skyline was en route to fly for a skydiving company that hired the plane for a Christmas party at the Flame Lily Adventures park. A Santa Skydiving event was planned. While en route, the plane struck four electricity transmission lines, cutting power to 1600 homes.

The plane crashed in Barrum Heads, Queensland north of Hervey Bay, and caught on fire. Three fire crews responded to put out the blaze as well as three police crews, including an inspector and the forensic crash unit. The 59 year old pilot died in the crash.

According to the ATSB:

The ATSB is investigating a fatal accident involving a Cessna 182A aircraft (registration VH-SBG) that occurred near Burrum Heads, Queensland on 17 December 2012.
Update 18 December 2012
ATSB investigators arrived on the accident site this morning.
The investigators are seeking witness reports including any video footage that might assist the investigation. Witnesses can call the ATSB on 1800 020 616.

It was reported that the aircraft struck a powerline before colliding with terrain. The pilot—the only person on board the aircraft—died in the accident.

Four ATSB investigators (with specialisations in engineering and aircraft operations) are expected to arrive on the accident site tomorrow morning.

Over the next three days of the on-site investigation, the team will be interviewing witnesses and examining the wreckage and accident site, including the powerline.

    Robinson Crashes in Sweden

    In August 26, 2013, a Robinson R44 in Tyresö-Flatenm Sweden was fetching water from a lake when the helicopter crashed.

    Two people were aboard as the helicopter came in at a low altitude. There was a big bang heard by witnesses on the ground.

    A junior high school class of fourteen and fifteen year-olds witnessed when the helicopter fell into lake Tyreso Flaten in Tyreso east. They paddled out to assist the people aboard the helicopter. When police, sea and air rescue and fire personnel responded to the scene, the two victims had already been rescued.

    The investigation is still underway.

    Bolivia Night Med-evacuation on Cessna Kills 4

    Where: Concepcion, Bolivia
    When: April 13, 2009
    Who: pilot and three passengers on a medical evacuation
    Why: The plane “impacted terrain” during the night flight, but no reason is listed. The cause is under investigation.

    Impacted terrain at night? I can’t wait to see what the NTSB has to say about this.
    Brazil already says this is the pilots fault, though it is unclear what this quote is supposed to mean:

    “Due to the fact that the pilot had violated flight rules, as explained by the representative of DGAC, the plane took off from the city of Santa Cruz 20 minutes after the expiry of the permitted duration of flights.”

    Determining the cause at this point is a bit precipitous. Most accident investigations take years.

    Russian Rusline/RusAir Tupolev Crash Kills 44, 8 Gravely Injured Survive

    What: Rusline/Rusair Tupolev TU-134A en route from Moscow to Petrozavodsk
    Where: outskirts of the Besovets village, Petrozavodsk, Russia
    When: Jun 20 2011 at 11:40 pm
    Who: 43 passengers and 9 crew
    Why: On approach to the airport, the plane struck the ground about 2600 feet shy of runway 2. On impact, the plane burst into flame, and skidded into the gardens of a residential area, although missing residences.

    Eight passengers were retrieved alive from the wreckage, in conditions ranging from severe (6) medium severe (1), critical grave (1). 44 were killed. The injured were ported to Moscow via IL-76 with a full medical team aboard (15 doctors, 5 psychologists.) One crew member survived, Julia Skvortsova, an attendant, is struggling for survival.

    The fire was under control by 1 a m on June 21. The investigation has just begun, and is cautioning the local papers not to jump the gun assuming runway lighting failure.

    Female Chinese Fighter Pilot Dies in Plane Crash

    A Chinese fighter plane crashed near Tangshan in Hebei, China, on November 12th.

    The aircraft, piloted by one of the first female fighter pilots in the country, was participating in a routine training exercise when it went down.

    The pilot Yu Xu, 30, was killed in the crash while her co-pilot was able to eject before the impact using a parachute. He was injured and was taken to hospital.

    Authorities confirmed that both pilots belonged to the Bayi Aerobatics Team of the People’s Liberation Army Air Force.

    Two Planes Collide Near Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, CA

    SfTwo planes, returning from the Pacific Coast Dream Machines festival, collided over the northern San Francisco Bay.

    According to Ian Gregor, the spokesperson of the FAA, the planes involved in the incident were single-engine Hawker Sea Fury TMK 20 and single-engine Cessna 210.

    The planes took off from Eagle’s Nest Airport for participating in the Pacific Coast Dream Machines festival, which is held annually at the Half Moon Bay Airport. Both the planes were on their way back home when they collided at about 4:05 pm, near the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge.

    The Sea Fury was able to reach Eagle’s Nest Airport in Ione, Northern California, where it landed 40 minutes after the collision. The Amador county Undersheriff, Jim Wegner, confirmed that the passengers of Sea Fury plane, a husband and wife, remained injured and did not need medical attention.

    The Cessna plane crashed into the bay. Crews found the debris in San Pablo Bay however, Loumania Stewart, the Coast Guard Petty Officer said that they have not found any clues about the pilot yet.

    As per the FAA records, the Sea Fury belongs to Sanders Aeronautics Inc., a company specializing in aircraft restoration. The company website reveals that the sanders brothers; Dennis and Brian Sanders, are air racers.

    Oklahoma Medevac Crash

    What: EagleMed LLC Eurocopter A-Star 350 helicopter en route from Integris Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City to a hospital about 90 miles away in Okeene
    Where: 50 miles northwest of Oklahoma City
    When: July 22 2010
    Who: Pilot Al Harrison, 56, of Edmond, and nurse Ryan Duke, 35, of Oklahoma City, died in the crash
    Why: While en route to pick up a patient, the helicopter crashed in a field near Kingfisher shortly after 7:30 p.m. The pilot and a nurse died in the crash; a paramedic sustained serious injuries.

    A source reported that the crew was having trouble with a door on the helicopter, and a piece flew off and hit the rotor shortly before the crash, but that information is unconfirmed.
