What: JAL Japan Airlines Boeing 777-300 en route from Okinawa to Osaka

Who: 332 passengers
Why: After takeoff, the left engine developed issues, reportedly leaving a smoke trail. Within twenty minutes the crew had landed the plane back in Okinawa. No injuries were reported, although there may have been an engine fire witnessed from the ground.
This is not the first time we have met this Malaysia Airlines Boeing.
Our first meeting with #9M-MRO was when it had a fender bender at Shanghai-Pudong International when it was taxiing and bumped the tail of a China Eastern Airlines A340 plane, B-6050. The Boeing wingtip broke off; and the tail of the other plane. Other sources list this as a different plane but you can’t argue with the BEA as a source. They’re French.

Our usual aviation photographers at Airliners net don’t show the down and dirty photos any more, so we had to do some ground-level searches to find this. These are from the plain old internet, none of our experts so feel free to blame (or praise) the search engine. This plane was broken. But if it was flying okay the accident well over a year ago, then do we presume the site of the damage was as good as new?
EasyJet flight U2-1897 had to return for an emergency landing in Manchester, United Kingdom, on February 2nd.
The Airbus A319-100 plane took off for Berlin Schonefeld Airport, Germany, but had to turn back after one of the engines ingested a bird.
The plane landed safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.
The airline arranged a replacement plane for the passengers.
Delta Airlines flight DL-1157 had to reject takeoff from Los Angeles, California, on July 9th.
The Boeing 737-800 plane was accelerating to takeoff for Kansas City, Missouri, when the crew rejected takeoff due to an engine failure.
The plane stopped safely and was towed to the apron. Everyone aboard remained unharmed.
According to the FAA, the faulty engine also left shrapnel on the runway.
A Yakovlev Yak-18T owned by Enjoair Clanwilliam and flying out of Stellenbosch Airport in S. Africa crashed, killing the pilot.
The plane suffered engine failure thirty minutes after takeoff.
The pilot lost the engine at around 200′ and tried turning back back. The plane spun into the strawberry field hothouses. The plane impacted and caught on fire. Paramedics found the wreckage on a farm.
Netcare911 and the fire department responded to the scene.
The pilot died on impact.
The accident is under investigation.
Croatia Airlines flight OU-470 had to reject takeoff from Zagreb, Croatia, on February 2nd.
The Airbus A319-100 plane was accelerating to takeoff for Charles de Gaulle Airport, France, when the crew received indication of an engine issue and rejected takeoff.
The plane slowed down safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.
Emirates Airlines flight EK-97 had to return and make an emergency landing at Dubai International Airport, Dubai, UAE, on December 25th.
The Airbus A380-800, en-route to Rome, Italy, was mid-air above Iran when the crew reported problems with the right hand engine, prompting it to return.
The plane landed uneventfully. All people onboard remained unharmed.
The passengers were accommodated in a replacement plane.
