An Air Berlin flight made an emergency landing at Erzurum Airport in Turkey, on October 21.
The pilot requested an emergency landing after an elderly Slovakian woman used the toilet reserved for business class travelers. The plane was en-route from Vienna, Austria to Abu Dhabi, UAE at the time. According to Edita Kmetova, 60, she got sick mid-flight and had to use business class toilet because economy class toilet was already in use. When she came out, the pilot, business class passengers, and stewardesses confronted her and handcuffed her for the rest of the flight.
The plane landed safely in Erzurum. According to the airport manager Abubekir Özcan, he asked the crew to un-cuff her and took her for questioning. However, since she had no criminal record, she was released.
Özcan also said he had requested the pilot to allow Kmetova to continue her journey as she had no money and looked devastated. But the pilot took off without her.

What: Air New Zealand Boeing 767-300en route from Auckland to Perth,WA
Where: Auckland
When: Jun 9th 2011
Who: 206 passengers, 10 crew
Why: Just after takeoff, while climbing, the left hand engine shot flames and emitted engine backfire and banging noises. The pilots described an interruption to the airflow through the left hand engine. The pilot shut down the engine and returned to Auckland where they made a safe landing. No bird strike was found, although that was initially assumed to be the cause. The engine’s electronic control has been replaced, and the engine is being tested; and the engine’s electronic control has been shipped to the manufacturer for testing.
Passengers were provided an alternative flight to Perth. Some of them were shaken, although the airline says they were never in any danger.
Lufthansa Plane Returns to Germany due to Technical Issue
Lufthansa flight LH-444 had to return and make an emergency landing at Frankfurt Airport, Germany, on May 3rd.
The Airbus A330-300 en-route to Atlanta, Georgia, had to return due to a technical issue.
The plane landed safely.
No injuries were reported.
Replacement plane was arranged for the passengers.
United Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Hamburg
United Airlines flight UA-865 made an emergency landing in Hamburg, Germany, on September 17th.
The Boeing 767-300 plane took off for Newark, New Jersey, but had to return shortly afterwards due to a technical issue.
The plane landed back safely. All one hundred and ninety-five passengers and eleven crew members remained unharmed.

Why: Well into the flight the right engine began smoking, and smoke was reported in the cockpit. After the engine was shut down, the flight diverted to Wick and made a safe landing.
A plane was diverted from Aberdeen to Wick to port the stranded passengers to their destination.
Air New Zealand Flight Returns to Auckland After Lightning Strike
Air New Zealand flight NZ-8678 made an emergency landing in Auckland, New Zealand, on March 9th.
The plane took off for Kerikeri, New Zealand, but had to turn back after it was struck by lightning.
The plane landed safely. Everyone aboard remained unharmed.
