    Where: Salt Lake City
    When: Jan 24th 2011
    Who: 1 unruly passenger
    Why: While en route, a passenger insisted on paying cash for a headset, although Jet Blue only accepts credit cards.

    The flight diverted to Salt Lake City where the passenger was taken off the plane. It is not reported if the passenger ever got his headset, nor if he was released into police custody.

    6 Dead in Plane Crash in Ecuador

    Who: 6 aboard
    Why: Captain Pilot Xavier González Montenegro, Lieutenant Pilot Campaign Mario Ramirez, Lieutenant Pilot Gabriel Palacios Jiménez, Iván Paredes Sergeant Corporal Yanez and Juan Román Guevara crashed while performing civic action flights. While en troute back to Tena the plane crashed, and fell into the Anzu river.

    What: Etihad Airlines Airbus A340-600 en route from Abu Dhabi to Heathrow
    Where: Stansted airport, north of London.
    When: Jan 24, 2011
    Who: 37-year-old British man
    Why: After a passenger made threats, the flight was provided two Royal Air Force jets as escort. The flight diverted to Stansted airport where the plane made a safe landing,and the passenger was taken into custody. There were no injuries.

    The unruly passenger did not threaten the safety of the aircraft.

    What: US Airways Airbus A320-200 en route from Chicago O’Hare to Phoenix
    Where: Eppley Airfield, Omaha
    When: Jan 23rd 2011 9:30 am
    Who: 107 aboard
    Why: While en route, the plane developed electrical problems affecting cabin temperature. The pilot made a safe landing after diverting to Omaha, and landing without nose gear steering, without which, the plane had to be towed to the gate.

    Southwest Airlines Emergency Landing in Oakland

    Why: While en route, the pilot of the Southwest Airlines Boeing received a warning message indicating a fire in wheel well. The pilot diverted to Oakland and made a safe landing where passengers disembarked and waited to transfer to another plane.

    Who: Pilot, passenger
    Why: While maneuvering at a low altitude (water drop) during a fire fighting mission, the plane collided with trees. The Spanish pilot, Antonio Fernandez, died in the crash. An observer was injured. The tanker is owned by la empresa Faasa Chile.

    The injured observer, David Guzman Henriquez was hospitalized at Hospital del Trabajador Concepción

    2 Engines Fail on Lufthansa Airbus

    What: Lufthansa Airbus A340-300 en route from Frankfurt/Main (Germany) to Addis Ababa Ethiopia
    Where: Dubrovnik Croatia
    When: Jan 18th 2011
    Why: While en route, 2 out of 4 of the Lufthansa engines had to be shut down.

    Pilots diverted the plane to Dubrovnik Croatia where they made a safe landing.

    Bishop Joseph Point, Deacon Eric Fennis and press chief Wim Peeters were aboard the flight en route from Frankfurt to the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa to host the feast of the Baptism of the Lord. Wim Peeters is quoted as saying he saw smoke coming from the engine.

    Lufthansa said there was smoke from the galley, but that would not have caused two engines to be shut down.
    No injuries were reported. The flight is under investigation.

    Delta MD-88 Lands in Show of Sparks

    What: Delta Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-88en route from Atlanta,GA to Little Rock, AR

    Who: 78 people on board,
    Why: On approach to Little Rock, the plane suffered an unsafe gear indication due to a hydraulics problem, and performed a go round for visual confirmation.

    The approach was aborted until the gear could be manually extended. Then the plane landed safely with emergency services on standby. No injuries were reported and passengers left the plane singing the captain’s praises.

    Mumbai: Kingfisher Makes Emergency Landing

    What: Kingfisher en route from Mumbai to Bhubaneshwar

    Who: 117 passengers
    Why: After taking off at 1:51, the pilot received a “cautionary systems alert,” declared emergency at 2:31 and returned to Mumbai at 3:15 where he made a safe landing. No injuries or damage to the plane was reported, and no details on what the alert actually was.

    Ultralight Crashes in Australia Flood Zone

    Why: Near the border of Queensland and New South Wales, the helicopter struck powerlines and crashed. The area is affected by flooding and difficult to access by emergency services but Queensland Fire and Rescue crews (Four fire units, comprising 16 firefighters) are en route to the location at t Donovans Road, south of the Barwon Highway. The 65 year old pilot has been reported as a fatality.

    Why: While en route, the pilots encountered mechanical problems with the plane.

    They diverted to Hungary where they made a safe landing. Mechanics in Hungary made repairs.

    Logan Emergency Landing

    Who: 44 passengers and 3 crew
    Why: After taking off 6 hours late after ground stops due to the weather, after five minutes in flight, smoke in the cabin forced the pilots to divert to Logan Airport. Emergency was declared due to “smoke in the lavatory.” In the meantime, passengers were covering their faces because of the smoke. A leak, mechanical problem and possible fire was reported on the Continental flight and speculation is that de-icing fluid had infiltrated the engine, causing burn-off.

    The plane landed safely at Logan, with emergency crews on standby.

    37 passengers boarded another plane around 3 pm to continue to their destination.

    Engine Fire Disrupts St Thomas Flight

    Who: pilot Carlos Garcia and First Officer Eduardo Vasquez
    Why: While taking off, an engine began smoking. The pilots returned to land but was unable to stop, skidded through the perimeter fence and came to a stop across from Emerald Beach Hotel. No one was injured but the plane was engulfed in flame.
    The incident tied up the airport, canceling flights for part of the morning.

    Qantas Diverts Due to Faulty fuel Valve

    Where: Nadi, Fiji

    Why: While en route to Los Angeles, the plane’s engine 4 developed fuel valve problems. The flight diverted to Nadi where they made a safe landing. Passengers were processed by 3 immigration officers.

    The number of passengers was not available.

    25 Qantas economy passengers were offered a ride on the Air Pacific FJ810 service from Nadi to LAX without their luggage. Other passengers took advantage of overnight accommodations as they waited for a replacement flight to come from Sydney. Apparently their first replacement flight also had to be replaced.

    Alaskan Airlines Emergency Landing in Sacramento

    What: Alaskan Airlines Flight 363 en route from Sacramento to Seattle
    Where: Sacramento International Airport
    When: Jan 12, 2011 6:20 pm
    Why: After takeoff, the plane ingested a bird into its engine.

    The pilot returned to Sacramento and made a safe landing. The extent of damage to the plane’s engine has not been released. The flight was cancelled.

    Why: While en route from Detroit, the Delta A320 made an emergency landing in Salt Lake City Utah. Braking and steering were affected, though details have not been released to the media.

    Delta reported that no one was in danger.

    Iran Air Boeing Crashes in Terman village

    What: Iran Air Boeing 727-200 en route from Tehran Mehrabad to Uromiyeh
    Where: Uromiyeh Iran

    Who: 94 passengers and 12 crew (alternately reported as 93 passengers and 11 crew)
    Why: The weather was foggy and it was snowing. While on final approach to Urmia Airport runway 21 the crew had to perform a go-around, but five miles from the airport struck the mountainous area of Terman village.

    The Deputy Minister of Roads and Transportation reported this as a crash during a forced landing outside the airport.

    The impact shattered the plane. 33 were rescued by emergency responders and hospitalized. 73 bodies were recovered, including all 12 crew members. There are 77 confirmed dead (currently), 42 of whom have been identified.

    Gear Controls Break off in Pilot’s Hand
