Why: The flight was en route when one passenger developed a medical emergency. The flight made a safe landing and the passenger was taken to Qikiqtani General Hospital.
After spending 4 hours on the tarmac with the passengers all aboard, the 777 had to be inspected (for the overweight landing) before it continued to Los Angeles

Where: flying over the Atlantic emergency when there was a problem with one of the engines. Landing at the the Bedfordshire airport in Luton and then flew on to London on the same plane.

Why:After engine trouble, the pilot shut down one of the jet’s engines, and made an emergency landing at the nearest airport.

What: Emirates Airlines Airbus A380-800 en route from Sydney to Dubai
Where: Sydney
Who: 380 aboard
When: Nov 11, 2012
Why: After takeoff, one engine on the Emirates Airlines Sydney-Dubai flight developed a problem and was shut down. Passengers reported hearing a bang and saw flames from the engine. We do not know if it was a bird strike.
Pilots dumped fuel, returned to Sydney and made a safe landing. Passengers were provided alternative flights.
An Emirates flight made an emergency stop at Gatwick Airport in Crawley, England, on March 29.
According to an airport spokesperson, the flight, heading from JFK International Airport in New York to Dubai, was diverted due to a medical emergency.
The plane safely landed at 10:51 p.m.
The nature of medical emergency is not clear at the moment.

What: Compagnie Africaine Aviation Boeing 727-200 en route from Kinshasa to Kananga Democratic Republic of Congo

Why: After takeoff, the plane suffered a hydraulics problem and returned to Kinshasa’s Ndjili airport, where it landed in heavy rain and skid off the runway. The right wing was damaged.

What: Ryanair Boeing 737-800 en route from London to Malmo
Where: Malmo
When: Jan 19th 2012
Why: While en route, the flight through through weather and suffered a lightning strike.
The flight made a safe landing in Malmo.
Damage is slight, reportedly to the wing. Consequently, the return flight was cancelled.

What: Jetstar Airways Airbus A330-200 en route from Phuket (Thailand) to Sydney,NS
Where: Changi Airport, Singapore

Why: While en route, the autopilot failed. The pilots diverted to Singapore where they made a safe landing with emergency services on standby.
Alternative arrangements have been made for the affected passengers, who were booked onto other flights and offered accommodation in Singapore.
