Australian DNA Specialists Going to Nepal

The Australian Federal Police are sending a team of 5 forensic specialists– Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) team– to recover the remains of twenty-four-year-old Chalene Zamudio and 31-year-old Andrew McLeod who were killed in Wednesday’s plane crash in Nepal. DNA identification of the bodies is required; and Nepal does not have the resources or equipment. There were eighteen casualties. Only the pilot survived. The team will be based in Kathmandu.

    Malaysia AirlinesMalaysia Airlines flight MH148 had to return and make an emergency landing at Tullamarine airport in Melbourne, Australia, on June 12.

    The flight was en-route from Melbourne to Kuala Lumpur when the crew reported a possible engine fire and requested an emergency landing.

    The plane landed safely and none of the 300 passengers reported any injuries.

    According to the airline, the initial inspection of the aircraft showed “no physical evidence of fire externally”.

    Air Niugini Flight Makes Emergency Landing due to Cabin Pressure Problems

    Air Niugini flight PX-2006 had to return and make an emergency landing in Brisbane, Australia, on April 10th.

    The Boeing 737-300 freighter plane took off for Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, but had to turn back due to issues with the cabin pressure.

    The plane landed back uneventfully. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

    Nepal Airlines Corporation Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Kathmandu

    nepal airlinesNepal Airlines Corporation flight RA-206 made an emergency landing in Kathmandu, Nepal, on September 26th.

    The plane was flying from New Delhi, India, when the crew reported smoke in cockpit and declared an emergency.

    The plane landed uneventfully. All 154 passengers and 9 crew members aboard remained safe.

    Quantas Autopilot Incident Spurs Part Safety Investigation


    What: Qantas Airways Airbus A330-300 en route from Perth in Western Australia to Singapore
    Where: Perth
    When: Saturday December 27,
    Who: The number of passengers and crew has not yet been released.
    Why: The autopilot on a Qantas Airways Airbus A330 suddenly disconnected 500 kilometres after taking off. The jet was cruising at 36,000 feet when the autopilot quit. The flight successfully turned and landed in Perth.

    This being the second autopilot fault, the situation is being investigated. A prior incident involving an on board system shutoff has been possibly attributed to communications interfering with aircraft onboard systems.

    The ADIRU (air data inertial reference unit) is the flight computer system component about which the crew received an error message during the Dec 27 incident.

    Qantas Emergency Landing in Darwin

    What: Qantas Boeing 747 en route from Sydney to Singapore to Germany
    Where: Darwin Airport
    When: Oct 4, 2012
    Who: 305 passengers
    Why: The Qantas flight diverted to Darwin after the cabin started to smell like something was on fire. The captain described the smell as burning plastic.

    No injuries were reported. Passengers were provided hotel accommodations and many of them tweeted about the incident

    AirAsia X Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Perth

    AirAsia X flight D7-237 made an emergency landing in Perth, Australia, on June 25th.

    The Airbus A330-300 plane took off for Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, but had to turn back after it began shaking mid-air due to an engine issue.

    The plane landed back safely. All three hundred and fifty-nine people aboard remained uninjured.
