Another United/Continental Emergency over Guam International Airport

What: United/Continental 767-400 en route from Honolulu to Guam
Where: Guam International Airport
When: Oct 2, 2011
Who: 247 passengers
Why: Would you believe it? On approach to Guam (again) there was a problem with a United/Continental flight.(We’ve reported three or four of them in the past couple of weeks.) This approach to Guam International Airport was aborted because the plane indicated a problem with the landing gear. Pilots circled, as they dealt with the issue. A flyby resolved the question of if the landing gear was down (it was visibly engaged);

The pilots were able to land safely, fortunately with an indicator malfunction rather than a gear malfunction.

    Who: not available
    Why: After takeoff, the plane developed a problem with cabin pressure. The flight flew at a lower altitude and continued on to Calgary where it landed safely.

    United Airlines Plane Diverts to Detroit due to Disruptive Passenger

    new-united-logoUnited Airlines flight 3461 had to make an emergency landing at Detroit Metropolitan Airport, Michigan, on January 7.

    The plane heading from LaGuardia Airport, New York, to O’Hare International Airport, Chicago, had to be diverted due to an unruly passenger. It is believed that a woman asked to be let off the plane mid-air and when the crew members told her it was not possible, she became aggressive and attacked the passengers and crew.

    The woman was restrained using scarves, belts, seat belts when the plane, carrying 69 passengers and 4 crew, landed in Detroit.

    She was taken into custody by the FBI. The plane resumed its journey after a short delay.

    The flight was being operated by Shuttle America.

    Hong Kong-Bound Air India Jet Diverts to Kolkata

    air indiaAir India flight AI314 made an emergency landing at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, on September 22.

    The Boeing Dreamliner, heading from Delhi to Hong Kong, was diverted after the pilots noticed a technical snag.

    The plane landed safely.

    All 216 passengers and 10 crew members aboard remained unhurt.

    S. Africa Airbus in Lightning Strike

    What: SAA South African Airways Airbus A340-300 en route from Johannesburg (South Africa) to Perth,WA
    Where: Perth
    When: Dec 6th 2011
    Why: After a normal flight, on approach to Perth, the plane was struck by lightning. Subsequently, pilots reported problems and began circling the airport. They did a flyby to observe the condition of the tires which were reported as having all “indications lost.” The plane eventually landed safely.

    United Airlines Plane Diverts to Ireland due to Severe Turbulence

    new-united-logoUnited Airlines flight UA-880 had to divert and make an emergency landing at Shannon Airport, County Clare, Republic of Ireland, on August 31st.

    The Boeing 767-300 en-route from Houston, Texas, to London, England, encountered severe turbulence over Atlantic Ocean, prompting the crew to divert.

    At least 12 passengers and 2 crew members suffered minor injuries.

    The injured were taken to hospital.

    The passengers were later accommodated in a replacement plane.

    A Flat…and Airports Need Maintenance Too

    What: United Airlines Boeing 767-300 en route from Washington to Brussels Belgium
    Where: Dulles (Washington DC)
    When: May 8th 2010
    Who: 176 passengers and 11 crew
    Why: About five minutes after takeoff, the on board crew was informed that pieces of the plane were left on the runway. Those pieces turned out to be the remains of tires. The plane went into a holding pattern to burn off fuel, then landed safely back at Dulles between two and three hours after takeoff. A piece of runway pavement was missing, leading to the conclusion that the runway popped the tire…

    Most times I fly United and hope that their maintenance is better than the look of their wearing interiors. I don’t usually worry too much about the airport.

    If I knew that the plane I was on had left pieces of itself on the runway, I’d rather be circling the airport than over the Atlantic. On the other hand, if I knew a shaggy runway was going to pop a tire on the plane I was on, I’d have walked the runway myself before taking off.

    What is a frequent flier to do but nag the FAA?
