    Daredevil CEO Dies in Experimental Plane Crash

    What: Raleighwood Aviation LLC Lancair IVP-TP (built by Carlos Garza)
    Where: Boise Airport, Idaho
    When: Feb 03 2012, 8:58 a.m.
    Who: 1 fatality
    Why: Steve Appleton was flying an experimental Lancair IVP-TP. On his second flight, he took off, turned back to the airport. He contacted ATC and said ““321 Lima Charlie, I’d like to turn back in, and uhh, land. Coming back in.” and then crashed.

    Safety Board investigator Zoe Keliher said “Appleton took off at about 8:46 a.m, got the plane five to 10 feet off the ground and landed again. He returned to the hangar, then took off again at 8:54 a.m.; he got to between 100 and 200 feet when, according to witnesses, the plane suddenly stopped, banked and fell to the ground.”

    It crashed between two runways.In 2004, Appleton survived a crash that gave him a punctured lung, head injuries, ruptured disk and broken bone. This time, Appleton died at the scene. The plane was badly burned.

    He was the CEO of Micron.

    He had several planes which he flew frequently. (He has owned 20 planes.)

    The four seat experimental plane is sold as a kit. This one was built by built by Carlos Garza.

    Experimental Crash in Brazil kills Deputy Mayor


    A small plane, an INPAER Explorer#PR-ZAL with three aboard was en route from Campos dos Amarais, Campinas to London but disappeared from radar while talking to ATC in Pirassununga Brazil at about ten on January 23rd. The experimental plane was registered but not certified, and barred from flying over populated areas.

    The Brazilian Air Force, Botucatu and São Manuel police forces were searching with a C-105 Amazonas, a H1 and an Eagle Helicopter, and found the remains of the passengers in dense forest, in a rugged area near Monte Alegre.

    The Squad of Campo Grande rescue team is on the scene.

    Locals who heard the failing engine, a roar and saw a flash of light in the woods notified authorities.

    The remains have been identified as:
    -Alderman and Deputy Mayor of Suzano (SP) Jessé Almeida,
    -Edson Geraldino, identified as owner of the plane.

    The identity of the third party, Rubens Geraldino, has not been confirmed by the family. The passengers (uncle and nephew) were from Mogi das Cruzes, SP, Brazil.

    One Fatality in Single Engine Crash, Oswego County NY

    What: Wittman W-10 Tailwind (Built by John R. Wing) practicing touch and go
    Where: Fulton, 1 mile SW of Oswego County Apt.- KFZY, NY
    When: Dec 1, 2011, 2:30 pm
    Who: pilot
    Why: After practicing touch and go the pilot crashed in a wooded area called Old Incinerator Hill, off Whitaker Road, near the line between Fulton and Volney, a mile sW of Oswego County Airport.

    Witnesses heard the engine sputtering before it went down in a heavily wooded area. Part of the wreckage was found fifteen feet up, in a tree.

    Plane crash under investigation

    What: small, single-engine experimental Nadiq, a fixed-wing, single-engine plane
    Where: Sandy Creek township, near Miller Road in Venango County
    When: July 24 2010, 11:25 a.m
    Who: fatalities: 57-year-old David Wagner, of Clairon, and former Clairon County commissioner 54-year-old Rob Carbaugh, of Seneca.

    Biplane crash Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome

    What: Avro504K replica bi-plane
    Where: Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome, Stone Church Road and Norton Avenue in Red Hook, just north of the Rhinebeck line.
    When: Saturday October 17 2009
    Who: pilot William Gordan
    Why: The engine stalled at an altitude of about 300 feet, crashed into a swamp on the aerodrome property, causing the top wings to collapse. Its lower wings sustained damage. By the time assistance arrived, the pilot had already climbed out of the plane.
