VivaColombia flight 5Z-355 had to return and make a safe emergency landing at Miami International Airport, Miami, Florida, on July 13th.
The Airbus A320-200 flying to Bogota, Colombia was mid-air when the crew reported fire indication on its right hand engine.
The plane landed successfully.
All 121 passengers and 5 crew members onboard remained unharmed.
Thomas Cook Airlines flight MT-2652 had to return and make an emergency landing in Manchester, England, on June 26th.
According to the airline, the airbus A330-200 plane heading to Holguin, Cuba, had to turn back due to a low oil indication.
The plane landed back safely, however, the tip of its left wing was missing.
All passengers and crew members remained safe.

What: Delta Airlines Boeing 767-300 en route from New York to Rome

Why: While en route, the plane encountered light turbulence. After changing flight levels several times and flickering of/on seat-belt signs, the crew requested a return to NY, suffering problems arising from only one operable altimeter. The crew managed to land the plane safely
Southwest Airlines flight WN-105 had to return for an emergency landing in Chicago, Illinois, on December 15th.
The Boeing 737-800 plane took off for Las Vegas, Nevada, but had to return shortly afterwards after the crew reported a bird strike.
The plane landed safely. There were 164 passengers and 6 crew members aboard at the time; all of them remained unharmed.
The airline arranged a replacement plane for the passengers.
Virgin Australia flight VA-465 made an emergency landing in Adelaide, Australia, on October 18th.
The Boeing 737-800 plane heading from Perth to Brisbane, Australia, was diverted after the crew noticed an electrical odor in the cabin.
The plane landed safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

What: TAM Linhas Aereas Airbus A330-200, en route from Paris to Rio de Janeiro

Why: On takeoff, the plane developed a problem. The right engine was shut down. After suffering what sounded like a backfire to passengers, the captain announced they would be returning.
The flight crew then dumped fuel (apparently in the English Channel) and returned to the airport. Passengers were provided accommodations and were rescheduled.
