What: Piasecki PV-18 en route from Adelanto to Flabob Where: Highway 395, one mile south of Adelanto Airport, CA When: Nov 7, 2009, 8:30 a.m. Who: 3 fatalities Why: After takeoff, the helicopter struck power lines and caught afire.
The helicopter (owned by Joseph William Pike of Victorville CA) was a vintage military aircraft built in 1951. The crash destroyed the helicopter, and there were no survivors.

What: Thomas Cook Boeing 757-200 en route from Turin to Birmingham International Where: Turin When: Feb 21 2010 Who: 231 passengers Why: While en route, the plane developed a fuel leak, substantial enough for passengers to see it pouring out of a wing. Although the captain announced a possible bird strike, a fuel leak had been detected in the plane in an earlier flight. The flight had to turn back, and circled Turin for half an hour before making an applause-filled landing.
The fuel leak was judged to be a bad valve, which was replaced prior to being ferried back to Birmingham.
What: Shanghai Airlines Boeing 757-200 en route from Shanghai to Hong Kong Where: Shanghai When: Aug 30 2010 Who: 131 passengers Why: After takeoff, the air conditioning began smoking. Passengers were provided wet towels to breathe through to filter out the smoke; and oxygen masks were deployed, apparently unannounced. The smoke was dense enough to impair vision; and the crew attempted to use the fire extinguisher without success.
The flight returned to Shanghai, where emergency vehicles were waiting; and the flight made a safe landing at 11:53 am.
Most passengers were booked to Hong Kong on alternative flights.

What: Delta Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-88 en route from Atlanta to Charlotte Where: Atlanta When: Nov 10th 2011 Why: Delta flight took off normally but once in the air, the engine seems to have caught fire (according to passengers who heard an explosion and saw sparks.) No fire was officially reported.
The right hand engine poured smoke into the cabin but no fire.
Pilots were able to gain altitude to turn minus one engine, and to make a safe landing in Atlanta. Passengers disembarked, and were provided pizza and alternative flights. At least one passenger would have preferred alcohol to pizza.

What: Cessna 172 registered to an El Cajon flight school en route from Gillespie Field in El Cajon to Torrance. Where: Close to a hwy overpass a half-mile from the Oceanside runway Oceanside Municipal Airport east of Interstate 5 in San Diego County. When: January 24, 2009 Who: 24-year-old pilot Amandeep Singh and an 18-year-old passenger Harshdeep Multani . Both have Indian passports. Why: The official word is that the plane developed mechanical trouble and was in the process of an emergency landing. On one account, the plane clipped a power line on approach to the runway and crashed. Another account says the plane struck a wooden utility pole. The plane also sheared off the valve to a sewage pipe, spewubg a geyser 25,000 gallons of raw sewage. The airport was closed. It took 45 minutes to extricate the pilot from the wreckage as sewage rained down on them. Decontamination at the scene was comprised of stripping down to their shorts and being hosed down on site.
A salvage crew removed the wereckage to Pearblossom in Los Angeles County,

What: Iran Air Boeing 727-200 en route from Chah-Bahar to Zahedan Where: Iran When: Oct 23rd 2009 Who: Not available Why: While enroute, the cabin pressure dropped rapidly. Oxygen masks were deployed, and the plane began an emergency descent to height where a safe pressure could be maintained. The flight continued on to its destination and landed safely.
The crisis is speculated to be due to a malfunctioning or blocked valve in the air conditioning system.

What: Delta Airlines Boeing 737-700 en route from Key West Atlanta Where: Sarasota When: Aug 8th 2010 Who: 2 flight attendants Why: While en route, the flight encountered turbulence, injuring two flight attendants. The flight flew on to Atlanta and made a safe landing.
