US Airways Airbus Goes Down in the Hudson

What: U.S. Airways passenger Airbus Flight 1549 enroute to Charlotte, N.C. taking off at t 3:26 p.m
Where: Hudson River off New York City
When: Thurs jan 15
Who: 155 on board scrambling onto rescue boat (50 passengers, three flight attendants and two pilots )
Why: Pilot hit a flock of geese after taking off from LaGuardia. (Two bird hits) Four minutes after takeoff passengers report hearing an explosion from the left side of the plane.

Heroic efforts were made, retrieving 150 from the freezing Hudson waters. (It was a 20-degree day.) Gov. David Paterson has called the rescue “miracle on the Hudson.”

The captain of US Airways 1549 is Chesley B. “Sully” Sullenberger, III. Captain Sullenberger has over 40 years of flying experience.” He a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy (B.S.), Purdue University (M.S.) and the University of Northern Colorado (M.A.)., former US Air Force (USAF) fighter pilot, who has served as an instructor and Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) safety chairman, accident investigator and national technical committee member, and has participated in several USAF and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) accident investigations.

Passengers are recorded saying the Captain walked the length of the aisle to verify everyone was safely out.

NTSB SENDING GO TEAM TO NEW YORK CITY FOR HUDSON RIVER AIRLINER ACCIDENT

The National Transportation Safety Board is sending a Go Team to investigate today’s crash of a US Airways Airbus A-320 (N106US) into the Hudson River in New York City.

Senior Air Safety Investigator Robert Benzon has been designated as Investigator-in-Charge of the 20-member team. NTSB Member Kitty Higgins is accompanying the team and will serve as principal spokesperson for the on-scene investigation. Peter Knudson is the press officer for the investigative team.

The team will be arriving in New York this evening.

    Qantas flight QF-123 made an emergency landing in Brisbane, Australia, on April 15th.

    The Airbus A330-200 plane took off for Auckland, New Zealand, but had to turn back due to an engine issue.

    Two Boeing Jets Clip at LAX

    United Airlines Flight 1199 (Boeing 737-990/ER) had just landed from Newark with 175 aboard; Alaska Airlines flight 143 (Boeing 757-224) to Portland was departing with 182 aboard when they made contact.

    The left hand winglet of the arriving 737 contacted the right hand horizontal stabilizer of the departing 757. Fortunately the Alaska jet was not on its take-off run, so the impact happened at a crawl (i.e. “taxiing at a low speed.”). Passengers said they felt a jolt. The planes were stuck together; and part of one plane had “snapped off.”

    The impact occurred at 7:51, derailing travel plans of the passengers, and scheduling for the two damaged jets. Some passengers were put up at local hotels, but there were no reported injuries.

    A passenger who shot a well-circulated picture that was released on twitter was besieged with reporter requests to post the image. Actor Peter Cambor who was aboard also tweeted that the jets were “stuck together.”

    Skyservice Airbus Hard Landing in Cuba

    What: Skyservice Airbus A320-200 en route from Toronto to Varadero Cuba
    Where: Varadero
    When: Jan 31 2010
    Why: While landing during high rain with little visibility, the flight made a hard landing and blew three tires. The passengers disembarked safely, and there were no injuries reported, except to the plane.

    Lufthansa Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Serbia

    Lufthansa flight LH-1410 made an emergency landing in Belgrade, Serbia, on July 22nd.

    The Airbus A320-200 plane flying from Frankfurt, Germany, was on final approach to Belgrade when the crew went around due to unsafe gear.

    The plane subsequently landed safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

    JetBlue Airbus makes Safe Landing in Florida

    JetBlue flight B6-921 made a safe landing at Palm Beach International Airport, West Palm Beach, Florida, on February 16.

    The Airbus A320-200 was on its final approach to the runway when the crew had to inspect the landing gear, allowing the plane for a slow landing.

    The plane landed safely.

    All 157 people aboard remained safe.

    Turkish Airlines Plane Makes Emergency Landing due to Hydraulic Failure

    Turkish Airlines flight TK-1911 had to make an emergency landing in Zurich, Switzerland, on January 25th.

    The Airbus A320-200 plane was flying from Istanbul, Turkey, when the crew declared an emergency due to a hydraulic failure.

    The plane landed uneventfully. Everyone aboard remained safe.
