U.S. Airways flight 706 en route from Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina to Germany returned for emergency landing shortly after taking off on August 18.
The plane was returned to Charlotte after the crew reported a strange odor on board. The plane touched down on the runway uneventfully at around 10 p.m.
Eleven passengers fell sick because of the smell. Seven of them were treated at the airport and 4 others were taken to Carolinas Medical Center with non-life threatening conditions.
The cause of the smell is not yet known.
The passengers were provided an alternate plane to resume their journey.
