    Air Canada Jazz Suffers Engine Fire Just After Takeoff

    On December 12, 2013, an Air Canada Jazz de Havilland Canada DHC-8-311 took off from Nanaimo Airport en route to Vancouver when the plane developed an engine fire.

    Fire broke out over open water when the plane reached cruising altitude minutes after leaving the airport. Passengers reported hearing a loud bang, and on the side of the plane, they saw flames from the affected engine.

    The pilot shut down the engine, and they made a safe landing. The crew also discovered an engine oil problem just prior to the fire.

    This was the first emergency landing at the Nanaimo Airport, which was shut down for four hours after the incident. Emergency services responded to the scene. Passengers used stairs to exit.

    Passengers spoke positively about the crew. No one was injured.

    Small Plane Makes Emergency Landing in Kansas after Engine Failure

    A small plane had to make an emergency landing on 21st Avenue, Galva, McPherson County, Kansas, on March 22.

    The Hawker Beechcraft G36 flying from Wichita, Kansas, was mid-air above McPherson County when the pilot detected trouble with mechanical indicators, deciding to make an emergency landing.

    The plane’s engine had failed and the landing gear was damaged.

    Both the pilot and the passenger were unharmed.

    Airbus Diverts to San Francisco International

    Where: San Francisco International
    When: Jul 13th 2009
    Who: 147 passengers
    Why: Nose gear steering of the US Airways Airbus failed on approach to Oakland. The flight was diverted to San Francisco, where nose gear operation apparently was recovered prior to landing.

    SkyWest Airlines Flight Diverts to Reno due to Mechanical Indication

    SkyWest Airlines flight OO-4564 diverted to Reno, Nevada, on September 11th.

    The plane heading from Boise, Idaho, to Los Angeles, California, was diverted due to a mechanical indication.

    The plane landed safely. All seventy-three people aboard remained unharmed.

    NordStar Plane Makes Emergency Landing in Russia

    NordStarNordStar Airlines flight TYA-62 had to return and make an emergency landing in Kyzyl, Russia, on September 8th.

    The plane heading to Krasnojarsk, Russia, had to turn back due to an indication that a cargo door was open.

    The plane landed safely. There were 29 passengers and 3 crew members aboard at the time; all of them remained safe.

    Qantas “No Leak” Emergency Landing

    What: Qantas Boeing 737-800 Aukland to Sydney
    Where: Sydney
    When: Apr 13 2011
    Who: 130 passengers
    Why: While en route, the plane reportedly had a fuel leak and an engine problem while over the Tasman sea. They made a “priority” landing in Sydney, with no injuries, although the fuel leak problem was mistakenly announced.

    The problem was diagnosed as a fuel transfer valve, which was subsequently replaced.

    Prior to landing safely in Sydney, the problem was announced on Twitter.
