I’m glad there were no injuries involved; but I chuckle picturing the chargeback on some flight attendant’s chit because the airline was forced to land the plane when she 1. burned the toast or
2. accidentally toasted the microwave or
3. tried to sneak in a smoke:

What: US Airways Boeing 737-400 en route from Charlotte,NC to Houston,TX

Why: After takeoff on this flight, an Albanian passenger got up and tried to exit the plane. It took 5 passengers and crew to subdue him. The pilots returned the plane to Charlotte where the disruptive Albanian-speaking passenger was taken into custody by police and removed to a hospital for observation.

Was he suicidal? Confused? Destructive? In despair? Incontinent? We may never know.

JetBlue Flight Makes Emergency Landing at Raleigh–Durham International Airport

JetBlue Airways flight B6-461 had to divert and make an emergency landing at Raleigh–Durham International Airport, North Carolina, on August 21st.

The Airbus A320-200 plane heading from LaGuardia Airport, New York, to West Palm Beach, Florida, was diverted after smoke was noticed on board.

The plane landed safely.

Six passengers were given medical assistance at the airport, while two others were taken to a hospital.

Iberia Emergency Landing in Madrid

What: Iberia/Air Nostrum Canadair CRJ-200 en route from Madrid, to Valencia
Where: Madrid
When: Sep 13th 2010
Why: The plane had successfully taken off from Madrid, then received an alert and returned to Madrid where the crew made a safe landing.

Systems were repaired and the flight resumed an hour and a half later.

Ethiopian Airlines Flight Returns to Brazil due to Cracked Windshield

Ethiopian Airlines flight ET-507 had to return and make an emergency landing at Sao Paulo–Guarulhos International Airport, Brazil, on May 31st.

The Boeing 787-800 plane took off for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, but had to turn back due to a cracked windshield.

The plane landed safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

Gear Controls Break off in Pilot’s Hand

What: JAC Japan Air Commuter de Havilland Dash 8-400, en route from Amami O Shima to Kagoshima
Where: Kagoshima Japan
When: Jan 8th 2011
Who: 74 passengers
Why: On takeoff, the gear liver broke. The crew flew on to Kagoshima, landing under emergency conditions with rescue crew on standby. The flight made a safe landing, and was towed.

At Kagoshima, the gear lever was replaced.

What: Virgin Galactic’s WhiteKnight Two four-engine, twin-fuselage “mother ship.” (experimental plane owned by Richard Branson) en route from Mohave, California to Las Cruces, N.M

Who: 2 pilots
Why: The plane landed unexpectedly in Mesa after a cockpit alarm sounded.

Plans to launch the plane into space in 2012 are intact.
