    Business Jet Crashes

Sunday a Cessna Citation business jet carrying two pilots and two passengers from Shoreham airport in England to an airfield at Foehren struck a post in foggy conditions, and crashed, in flames when firefighters arrived. The two pilots and two passengers—all German— died at the scene. The wing stuck in (struck?) a pylon to the north-east of the 1200 meter runway. The Rivenich landfill is near the airport.

The airfield is not equipped for instrument landings. Landings are not recommended with visibility less than 1,800 metros, but visibility was less than 100 meters.

A passerby witnessed the incident and called it in. Trier Emergency services responded.

What: Dana Air McDonnell Douglas MD-83 en route from Abuja to Lagos, Nigeria
    Where: Iju neighborhood, Lagos
    When: June 3, 2012
    Who: 153 passengers
Why: Weather was clear. The Dana Air flight experienced engine trouble first in one engine, then the other and was nearing to the airport when it apparently struck a cable and crashed into a residential area less than four miles from the airport. There are no survivors.

Pilots already flying on one engine had slowed, then the second engine failed.

The number of people aboard is not definite as it is not reflected in the flight manifest. Apparently some paper-ticketed passengers are not recorded on computer records, and the passenger manifest is in the process of being double-checked.

The plane had refueled which contributed to a massive fire. The number of casualties in the furniture store/workshop and apartment building that were struck is unknown.

The Nigerian Red Cross, Nigeria’s air crash safety investigators,2 firetrucks and 50 rescue personnel arrived on the scene. A number of charred remains have been recovered.

Local residents report hearing a loud explosion that sounded like a bomb.

Photos of the disaster site show people wandering around the wreckage, with the site not secured.

What: Aerolineas Argentinas Airbus A340-200 en route from Auckland to Buenos Aires
    Where: Pacific Ocean
    When: Jan 21, 2010
    Who: 229 passengers
Why: An hour into the flight, the left engine had to be shut down. The Airbus returned to Auckland to make a safe landing. After undergoing maintenance, repairs and essential services, the plane will optimistically be resumed eventually. It is not known if passengers have hotel accommodations or if they will be waiting at the airport.

Any time an engine must be shut down, especially when it is an airbus over a body of water, we all breathe a sigh of relief at a safe landing.
