BA Airways emergency landing with Engine fire

A British Airways Airbus A319-100 was en route from London to Oslo when it developed an engine problem.

Passengers heard a loud explosion, and saw smoke from the right engine. Apparently the engine doors blew off.

During takeoff, the casing of the left engine ‘came away’ and the right engine exploded when the plane made a quick return, landing in London.

Good thing that Emergency services were on standby to extinguish the engine fire.

Passengers and crew made an emergency evacuation via emergency slides.

None of the 5 crew and 75 passengers were injured.

The ABC News video below suggests a birdstrike that is purely speculative

Lockheed Martin Delivers 300th Common Cockpit to the U.S. Navy

OWEGO, N.Y., Feb. 23, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) has successfully delivered the 300th Common Cockpit, the nerve center for every multi-mission helicopter in the U.S. Navy fleet, aboard an MH-60S.
“The Common Cockpit underwent one of the most demanding certification processes at NAVAIR, and is now the standard by which all cockpits are judged,” said Capt. Dean Peters, NAVAIR program manager for H-60 Multi-Mission Helicopters. “Our MH-60R and MH-60S crews rely on this system to support the broad range of missions and operations they fly every day.”

The Common Cockpit is the hub of all activity aboard MH-60R and MH-60S aircraft. Four large, flat-panel, multi-function, night-vision-compatible, color display screens provide the crew with instant information on everything from weather to weapons and sensors.

“The Common Cockpit reduces workload and increases situational awareness for MH-60R and MH-60S crews,” said George Barton, director of Naval Helicopter programs at Lockheed Martin. “Having a common cockpit also reduces the logistics footprint and total ownership cost to the Navy.”

Upcoming improvements to the Common Cockpit will include the addition of the Situational Awareness Technology Insertion (SATI) package, which is a set of upgrades to the flight management system. A new integrated digital map will provide pilots with a clear picture of their operating area, and an upgrade to the Identification Friend-or-Foe system will ensure there is no interference during transmission and that it is interoperable with the Federal Aviation Administration and other agencies.

Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin is a global security company that employs about 132,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The Corporation’s 2010 sales from continuing operations were $45.8 billion.

    Boeing Production Rate Increase

SEATTLE, May 17 — Boeing (NYSE: BA) today announced that it will increase production rates on the Next-Generation 737 program to 34 airplanes per month in early 2012. The planned rate increase is aimed at satisfying continued strong demand for the Next-Generation 737. In addition, the company continues to study further potential 737 rate increases, given continued customer demand.

“With over 5,200 sold to date, the Next-Generation 737 is the workhorse in our customers’ fleets around the world,” said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Jim Albaugh. “Even through the global economic downturn, our diverse 737 backlog has remained very strong. Increasing the 737 production rate is the right thing to do to meet the growth and fleet replacement needs of our customers.”
The current production rate on the 737 program is 31.5 airplanes per month. Suppliers for the 737 program are prepared to support the rate increase. The production rate decision is not expected to have a material impact on 2010 financial results.

“The global economy continues to recover this year and we believe that airlines will return to profitability in 2011,” said Randy Tinseth, vice president of Marketing for Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “We believe that there will be an increased demand for airplanes – especially in the market served by the Next-Generation 737 – in 2012 and beyond.”
With more than 2,000 unfilled orders from more than 80 customers around the world, the Next-Generation 737 is the newest and most technologically advanced airplane in its class. Airfinance Journal’s investors’ and operators’ poll consistently ranks the Next-Generation 737 as the most preferred airplane in its class due to its wide market base, superior efficiency and lowest operating costs.
