    Congo: Filair Crash kills 21

    What: Filair Let 410 en route from Semendwa to Bandundu
    Where: Bandundu Congo
    When: August 25 2010
    Who: 21 aboard (18 passengers 3 crew), 20 fatalities
    Why: The preliminary information says that the plane was unable to land, and ran out of fuel. Landing short of the runway, the plane struck a building, killing two children inside.

    The Let is a Czeck turboprop.

    The Filair is based in Kinshasa. It’s fleet is reputed to be poorly maintained and is on the nofly list. The plane’s owner Danny Philemotte was piloting and died in the crash.

    19 bodies were recovered and two survivors. One survivor died in the hospital. One survivor is hospitalized and in critical condition.

    A survivor said that the crew had been told to land on a “reserve strip” beside the main runway. The passengers panicked, running to one side and unbalancing the plane, and the pilot lost control. Apparently fuel was not the issue (150 liters liters recovered from the crash.)

    SilkWay Cargo Flight Crashes at Airport killing 2 of 9 aboard.

    A SilkWay Airlines cargo flight crashed while departing from Dwyer Airport in Afghanistan. There were no passengers, and the crew consisted of five Azerbaijani, three Ukranians, and a Uzbek captain. Two of nine people did not survive the crash, although reports don’t yet say which two. The accident occurred at 6:30 PM on May 18. The plane had been chartered from Silkway Airlines to deliver goods in Afghanistan. The accident is under investigation.

    Twin-Engine Aircraft Crashes at Idaho-Montana Border

    A twin engine plane (#N888GG) crashed and caught fire at around 5:30 pm on June 17 in the parking lot at Lost Trail Pass, Conner, Montana at the summit of Lost Trail Pass on the border of Idaho and Montana.

    The Ravalli County Sheriff office confirmed that the aircraft was destroyed to the extent that it was not possible to recognize that it was a Grumman G-21A. Witnesses say the plane spun down, dropped hard and flat, and on impact was immediately engulfed in flames. Nothing recognizable remained but the wing tips.

    Only the pilot was aboard.

    Ravalli County Sheriff and Federal Aviation Administration investigator Allen Kenitzer are looking into the details and causes of accident.

    Small Plane Crashed in Orleans County, New York

    A small plane crashed in a wooded area in Gaines, Orleans County, New York, on August 23rd.

    The plane had just taken off from Gaines Valley Aviation Airport when it experienced a mechanical problem and went down.

    The pilot, Earl Luce Jr., 64, of Brockport, was the only one aboard. He remained uninjured.

    6 Killed after Private Plane Crashes into Maryland Home

    crash-houseA small private plane crashed into a house in Gaithersburg, Maryland, on December 8.

    Authorities said the plane took off from Chapel Hill, North Carolina and was scheduled to land at the nearby Montgomery County Airpark when it crashed. One of the aircraft’s wings, having fuel inside, caught fire after catapulting into the house.

    Three residents of the house, including 36-year-old of Marie Gemmell, her infant baby boy and a 3-year-old son, were killed in the crash. Their bodies were found in the bathroom at second floor. The other 2 residents, including Gemmell’s husband Ken Gemmell and their 5-year-old daughter, were not home at the time of crash.

    All 3 occupants of the plane were are also killed. They were identified as Dr. Michael Rosenberg, 66, David Hartman, 52 and Chijioke Ogbuka, 31. All of them hailed from Raleigh, North Carolina.

    The crash also caused damage to 2 other houses.

    The NTSB is investigating.

    Piper Crashes in Australia

    What: TRENK Contracting Pty. Ltd. Piper PA-46-310P en route from Doolgunna to Meekatharra
    Where: Meekatharra Airport Australia
    When: June 15, 2011, 9:00 am
    Who: Pilot and passenger
    Why: The pilot and passenger in a piper that was flying from Doolgunna to Meekatharra are both hospitalized today, after crashing short of the Meekatharra runway.

    The plane’s right wing and undercarriage were smashed, and the hood was lost. Meekatharra voluntary brigade reported a fuel spill but nothing that would cause a fire.

    Both pilot and passenger only had minor injuries, and one was already discharged from Meekatharra Hospital. One injured party was flown to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth.

    The crash is under investigation by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau who declined to make a statement.
