    Trainer Flight Crashes in Modimola Dam, South Africa

    On April 16, 2013, a Pearl Coral-owned de Havilland DH.82A Tiger Moth with two aboard crashed in Modimola Dam in Mmabatho in South Africa.

    The training flight crashed into the water witnessed by a cattle herder near the dam.

    When boats arrived to search, it was dark, and too late to search.

    Initially, the occupants were assumed to be the pilot and an assistant; and it is assumed this was a trainer from Mafikeng Airport. The cause of the crash is unknown.

    Police divers found the instructor in the water. The student pilot’s body was trapped inside the plane which was submerged in water with only its tail visible.

    The Civil Aviation Authority is investigating.


    Update
    The fatalities were named by police as instructor Marthinus Steyn, 54, and student pilot Narco van Straaten, 23.

    Pilot Killed after Small Plane Crashes in Wyoming

    A single-engine small plane crashed in Dubois, Wyoming, on November 5th.

    Authorities said the plane went down during take off from the Dubois Airport.

    The pilot, who was the only one aboard, was killed in the accident.

    The NTSB and the FAA are investigating.

    Lost Russian TU-142

    What: Russian Pacific Fleet Tupolev Tu-142M3
    Where: Tatar Strait (Tatarskiy Strait)
    When: 06 November, 2009
    Who: Eleven people on board
    Why: While on a routine training mission, the flight disappeared from ATC radar in the vicinity of Cape Sadinga.

    The retrieval effort of wreckage, bodies and black boxes continues with ferry boats and harbor tugs and aircraft of the 11th army VVS PVO (Air Defense), although hampered by strong sea currents.

    At 07.10 am with the help of sonar in the vicinity of Cape Sadinga north bay Silantyeva at a depth of 44 meters, an object was discovered that is presumed to be the lost plane. On the water surface items were visible which may be fragments of the plane shell. Rescue work continues.

    Clare County Cheyenne Crash

    What: Cheyenne Sales & Leasing Piper PA-31T2 Cheyenne IIXL en route from Traverse City, Michigan to Tiffin Ohio
    Where: near Clare County Airport
    When: DEC 4, 2009, 6:45 p.m.
    Who: Pilot
    Why: While en route, the flight crashed in Claire county woods.

    Witnesses reported the plane out of control but it is not noted if it burst into flames before or after impact. The wreckage was found at 7:21 p.m, a thirty minutes hike into the heavily wooded area north of M-61 and east of Highway 127.

    One fatality was reported.

    Cessna Crashes into Field in South Africa; 2 Killed

    CessnaA small plane crashed into a sugar cane field off N2 highway near Winkelspruit, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, on August 25.

    Authorities said the Cessna 172 went down when it was transporting 2 people. The aircraft was on fire when the police and rescue teams arrived.

    Both occupants of the ill-fated plane succumbed to their injuries at the scene. Their identities have not yet been released.

    The cause of crash is not known at the moment.
