Petronorte helicopter Crash


On July 9, 2013 around 9 a.m., a Petronorte MBB/Kawasaki BK 117A-4 was en route to repair the Caño Limon oil pipeline when it crashed near the town of Ocaña in the Norte de Santander, Colombia.

Five people were aboard the helicopter when it crashed.

The damage to the oil pipeline was the result of a FARC attack. The helicopter may have also been attacked but the stories are conflicting. Another report mentions the helicopter striking electrical wires.

The army assisted the oil company with retrieval of the three crewmembers and two petroleum technical workers who died in the crash.

Civil Aeronautics is investigating.

    1 Killed, 2 Injured in Garfield County Helicopter Crash

    A helicopter crashed in Garfield County, Washington, on January 27th.

    The aircraft, operated by Kiwi Air, was carrying three Department of Wildlife biologists when it went down.

    One person was killed in the crash. Two others were injured and were taken to hospitals.

    Helicopter Crash in Schoemanskloof Kills Lion Sands Game Resort CEO


    A privately owned Robinson R-44 with four aboard crashed in the vicinity of Schoemanskloof outside Nelspruit in South Africa. The flight had taken off from Johannesburg and was en route to White river when it crashed in heavy mist. No one aboard survived. The fatalities were listed as Nick More, Pierre de Villiers, Lance Cooper and Elmarie Martens.

    Remains of the victims will be handled at the state mortuary in Pretoria.

    The South African Civil Aviation Authority will be investigating the crash site, Zondagskraal farm, four kilometers from the N4 highway.

    Pilot Mr Nick More, owned the helicopter and was CEO of Lion Sands Game Resort.

    Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport indicated that the flight plan listed that More departed from Nelspruit Airfield at 06:30, collected passengers at Casterbridge. The destination was listed as Grand Central Airport in Gauteng.

    Zhersu Avia Emergency Landing, Kazakhstan

    On Feb 15, 2013, a Zhersu Avia LLP Bell 206L3 made an emergency landing near the village of Bakanas in Kazakhstan. The helicopter spun and landed on its side but no injuries were reported.

    The two Ukrainians aboard were not hurt.

    The the Ministry of Transport and Communications in Kazakhstan will be investigating.

    Medevac Disaster

    What: Medical evacuation helicopter en route from Ponte Lettia heliport in Upper Corsica
    Where: on the French Mediterranean island of Corsica in the mountainous area near the city of Bastia. The helicopter “brutally” flew into a mountain in poor weather.
    When: Sun Apr 26, 2009
    Who: Five people: two pilots, a medic and two patients
    Why: In spite of bad weather (fog, wind and rain), there was no distress signal. The medical team hadn’t realized how close to delivery the mother was; the helicopter was en route to the hospital as the Frenchwoman was giving birth. Mother and newborn perished in the crash along with everyone aboard. A rescue team of 150 found the wreckage.

    Mexican Crash Kills 2

    What: Armada de Mexico helicopter Russian-built MI-17 chopper en route from Veracruz to Mexico City
    Where: border between Veracruz and Puebla
    When: 10-SEP-2009
    Who: 2 fatalities, 3 injuries. The two dead are a lieutenant and a mechanic
    Why: No reason is given for the crash. The weather at the time was rainy and foggy with limited visibility. Survivors were taken to hospitalization facilities in Jalapa and Perote

    Eurocopter Fuel Gauge Safety Alert

    No one is saying that the recently discovered Eurocoptor problem with the low fuel level warning system had anything to do with Clutha ——leased police Eurocopter crashed thru the roof of the Clutha pub in Glasgow killing three crew members and seven people inside the pub——but it is out there on the table and one of those things that make you go hmmm. Connection or not, the Clutha accident is causing Eurocopter to take a closer look at their helicopters.

    The preliminary report on Clutha is not out yet, but there are reports that the helicopter did not run out of fuel.

    The Eurocopter fuel indicator problem is that the supply-tank fuel gauge can overestimate how much fuel is in the tank. Apparently the gauge can skip amber and go straight to red (low fuel.)

    Eurocopter is sending out safety notices about the issue..

    In the Clutha crash, the number of fatalities has risen to ten.
