    Sukhoi-Superjet Goes Missing on Demo Flight over Indonesian Mountains

    Update:

    • A team of around 200 police, military and rescue workers are headed in vehicles and on foot towards Salak mountain where the plane went missing.
    • A passenger list of 36 names posted at Halim airport showed that most of the people on board were Indonesian airline and aviation representatives, as well as five journalists and a representative of French aircraft engine maker SNECMA.

    What: Sukhoi Superjet 100-95 en route from Jakarta to Jakarta Halim Perdanakusuma Airport
    Where: Indonesia
    When: May 9th 2012
    Who: 36 passengers, 6 crew and 2 Sukhoi official
    Why: The Sukhoi Sukhoi Superjet was thirty minutes into a demo flight over Jakarta when it disappeared from radio contact. It had already flown to Myanmar, Pakistan and Kazakhstan. After Jakarta, it was supposed to visit Laos and Vietnam.

    The flight has not been reported landing at any airport. According to an individual who was supposed to be on the flight, it was only to last thirty minutes, and would have run out of fuel by now, if it had been flying all this time.

    At 15:30L the crew asked ATC to descend to 6000 feet in an area where there is a 6,200 foot-high mountain. The plane lost contact on a descending right turn and has been reported as missing.

    No crash site has been located; it may have crashed into Mount Salak.

    The plane was flown by plane was operated by senior test-pilot Aleksandr Yablontsev and co-pilot Aleksandr Kochetkov, and there were six other russians aboard, Aero navigator Oleg Shvetsov, flight engineer Aleksey Kirkin, leading test flight engineer Dennis Rakhmanov, test flight deputy head Nikolay Martyshenko, “Sukhoi” company Sales Director Evgeny Grebenshchikov, and contract manager Kristina Kurzhukova.

    Hijacking is unlikely, and appears to be a media rumor.

    Along with the rest of the world, we are hoping and praying the plane will be found intact.

    One helicopter was sent out on a search mission, according to a local twitter. (See video below.)

  • Miracle of Flight

    Yes, it is a miracle. Thanks to the pilots, and pilot unions, and FAA, and crews, and Easa, and Montreal Convention, and IATA, and airports, and airlines, and all the manufacturers, maintenance crews, and everyone I am leaving out, and of course the powers that be, to all who work to keep us safe.

    Piper Crashes in Cornfield near York Airport

    What: Condor Flying Club Inc Piper PA-28-180 Cherokee en route from Fredrick, Maryland.
    Where: Lincoln Highway West, Thomasville, PA
    When: Jan 29, 2012, 11:00 am
    Who: 1 fatality
    Why: The piper crashed in a cornfield off of Lincoln Highway, a mile from the airport. The pilot, Douglas Helms of Westminster Maryland was pronounced dead at the scene. Helms will be at Lehigh Valley Hospital. The cause of the crash is unknown. An investigation is underway. The vehicle is registered to CONDOR FLYING CLUB INC

    Three Survive Helicopter Ditched in AZ Lake

    What: Sky Blue Helicopters Robinson R44 Helicopter
    Where: Theodore Roosevelt Lake in Gila County
    When: Dec 7 2012
    Who: 3 aboard
    Why: Two men and one woman were aboard a helicopter on a sightseeing tour when it crashed in Theodore Roosevelt Lake in Gila County. The water where the helicopter crashed was 60 feet deep. Boaters pulled the passengers from the water.

    The two men and one woman were hospitalized in Phoenix. Julie Barba, 49, remains in the hospital, but Fred Cleeves, the 62-year-old pilot, and George Riedel, 64, were released from Scottsdale Healthcare Osborne Medical Center.

    Gila County Sheriff’s Office Divers attached a buoy to the helicopter to mark its location before removal.

    Fed Ex Flight Returns to Philadelphia

    Photo Flight Ends in Collision, 2 Fatalities


    What: Wings Over Holland General Avia F-22BV Pinguino
    Wings Over Holland Diamond DA40D Diamond Star TDI
    Where: Zeeasterweg, Dronten Netherlands
    When: October 22, 2012 4:35pm
    Who: 2 aboard, 2 injured
    Why: A Diamond DA40D Diamond Star TDI (PH-TDE) and a General Avia F-22BV Pinguino (D-EDMJ) crashed following a mid-air collision. The accident happened during an air-to-air photo flight
    Those aboard the Pinguino flight were airlifted by medical evacuation Lifeliner 1 and Lifeliner 4.

    The two aboard the Diamond Star did not survive.

    Rescue efforts were hampered by the wet ground which trapped afire truck that responded to the scene.
