King Air Lands Safely in Adelaide


What: Privately chartered twin-engine King Air belonging to Adelaide-based company Corporate Aircraft Charter en route to Kingscote on Kangaroo Island

Who: Brenton Hollitt and passengers
Why: Pilot Brenton Hollitt reported difficulties with its landing gear. The plane landed safely , remaining upright despite its landing wheels not locking into place. The plane landed “on its fuselage in a cloud of smoke, with the aircraft skidding sideways on the runway.” The pilot was praised as ” professional, calm, just terrific, I can’t praise him highly enough.” “

    Milwaukee: Another CRJ Gear Up Landing

    What: Skywest Canadair CRJ-200 en route from Omaha,NE to Milwaukee,WI
    Where: Milwaukee
    When: Sep 28th 2010
    Who: 36 passengers and 3 crew
    Why: Averting their first approach to Milwaukee, the crew received a gear up message. They performed a flyby confirming the situation, attempted several times to get the gear down, and finally touched down with the left gear up.

    The plane slid down the runway on its nose gear, right hand main gear and left wing, and although I don’t think anyone recorded the sparks as in the JFK landing with the flight attendant’s relentless “stay down” directive, the landing was no doubt just as dramatic and successful.

    Passengers disembarked through the main door.

    CBS news quoted a passenger who said he heard the crew attempt to put down the gear 4 or 5 times. Bombardier spokesman Marc Duchesne said, “The aircraft has logged more than 27 million flight hours and more than 22 million takeoff and landing cycles, so these are very good and reliable aircraft.” The plane is designed for short hops.

    Fortunately, the crew flying these aircraft seem to be made of more heroic and substantial backbone than the landing gear.

    ANN Landing Gear Up in Osaka

    What: ANN All Nippon Network de Havilland Dash 8-400 en route from Osaka Itami to Niigata
    Where: Itami Airport, Japan
    When: Dec 8th 2009
    Who: 22 on board
    Why: After takeoff, the plane could not retract the gear. The crew decided to return to Itami Airport where it made a safe landing. Passengers were provided an alternative flight to Niigata.

    Qatar Airways Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Dhaka

    Qatar Airways flight QR-635 had to return and make an emergency landing in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on October 22nd.

    The Boeing 777-300 plane took off for Doha, Qatar, but had to turn back due to indication of a gear problem.

    The plane landed back safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

    Qantas Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Melbourne

    Qantas flight QF-568 had to divert and make an emergency landing in Melbourne, Australia, on April 14th.

    The Airbus A330-300 plane heading from Perth to Sydney, Australia, was diverted due to loss of cabin pressure.

    The plane landed safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

    Fedex Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Memphis

    Fedex Federal Express flight FX-130 had to return and make an emergency landing in Memphis, Tennessee, on March 28th.

    The plane took off for Montréal–Mirabel International Airport, Canada, but had to turn back after the crew reported an issue with the landing gear.

    The plane landed safely. Everyone aboard remained unharmed.
