When: Missing Saturday. 13 boats, 4 helicopters 70 Land SAR (search and rescue) volunteers have been searching since Saturday.
Who: helicopter pilot Morgan Saxton missing and presumed dead
Why: Helicopter reported missing on Saturday, overdue on a flight from Haast. The pilot was flying to Wanaka to reposition a machine for frost-fighting work. Saxton was on bail, pending appeal, after he and his father, David, were jailed stealing Ngai Tahu greenstone. Both Saxton and his father have flown many rescue missions

Emirates Flight Diverts to Shannon Airport After Medical Emergency

Emirates flight EK-237 made an emergency landing at Shannon Airport, Ireland, on October 23rd.

The plane heading from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, to Boston, Massachusetts, was diverted after a passenger suffered a medical emergency.

V Air Plane Returns to Taipei due to Overheated Lithium Power Bank

V AirV Air flight ZV-252 had to return and make an emergency landing in Taipei, Taiwan, on May 6th.

The Airbus A321-200 took off for Tokyo, Japan, but had to return shortly afterwards after smoke was seen emanating from a lithium power bank carried by a passenger.

The plane landed uneventfully. All 161 people aboard remained safe.

CAA Lava Landing

What: CAA (Compagnie Africaine d’Aviation) en route from Kinshasa to Goma, Congo
Where: Goma
When: Thursday Nov 19 2009
Who: 117 passengers including the governor of North Kivu province
Why: On landing, the plane overshot the runway and landed in hardened lava surrounding an airport in eastern Congo.

20 people were injured.

Spirit Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Fort Lauderdale

Spirit Airlines flight NK-244 made an emergency landing in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on July 31st.

The Airbus A319-100 plane flying from Guatemala City, Guatemala, was descending toward Fort Lauderdale when the crew declared an emergency due to a strange odor in the cockpit.

The plane continued for a safe landing. All one hundred and forty-eight people aboard remained unharmed.

Jet2 Plane Lands in Emergency at East Midlands Airport

Jet2A Jet2 flight, on its way from Ibiza, made an emergency landing at East Midlands Airport, England, on the night of September 3.

According to the airline, emergency landing was made after a “minor electrical fault” was discovered in the plane.

The Boeing 737 landed safely and everyone aboard remained unharmed.

A Jet2 spokesperson later said, “Following a safe arrival at East Midlands Airport of flight LS644 we decided to disembark passengers as quickly as possible as a precautionary safety measure because a minor electrical problem led to some smoke in the cabin….All passengers were looked after by our airport team and a full investigation is now under way. The safety of our passengers is of paramount importance.”

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has launched an investigation following the incident. “The AAIB has deployed a team to investigate a serious incident to a commercial airliner that occurred at East Midlands Airport on the evening of Wednesday September 3,” AAIB statement said.

Where: Khabarovsk
When: Dec 9th 2009
Who: 163 on board
Why: After take-off the gear retracted (but rec’d a gear disagree message that the gear would not retract.) The flight diverted to Khabarovsk and landed safely.
