    Ryanair Flight Rejects Takeoff From Malta International Airport

    Ryanair flight FR-3883 had to reject takeoff from Malta International Airport, Malta, on May 18th.

    The Boeing 737-800 plane was accelerating to takeoff for Luton Airport, England, when the crew received an aft door indication and rejected takeoff.

    The plane safely returned to the apron. All one hundred and seventy-two people aboard remained unharmed.

    Turbulence over Atlanta

    On January 10, a Delta Airlines Boeing 757-200 en route from Jacksonville to Atlanta encountered turbulence on approach to Atlanta.

    A flight attendant was injured.

    No other injuries were reported.

    The incident is under investigation.

    Airworthiness Directives; The Boeing Company Model 737-100, -200, -200C, -300, -400, and – 500 Series Airplanes

    SUMMARY: We are adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for the products listed above. This AD requires installing two warning level indicator lights on the P2-2 center instrument panel in the flight compartment for certain airplanes. For a certain other airplane, this AD requires activating the cabin altitude warning and takeoff configuration warning lights. For all airplanes, this AD also requires revising the airplane flight manual to remove certain requirements included by previous AD actions, requires new pressure altitude limitations for certain airplanes, and advises the flightcrew of the following changes: revised emergency procedures to use when a cabin altitude warning or rapid depressurization occurs, and revised cabin pressurization procedures for normal operations. This AD was prompted by a design change in the cabin altitude warning system that would address the identified unsafe condition. We are issuing this AD to prevent failure of the flightcrew to recognize and react properly to a valid cabin altitude warning horn, which could result in incapacitation of the flightcrew due to hypoxia (lack of oxygen in body), and consequent loss of control of the airplane.

    United Airlines Plane Diverts to Las Vegas

    new-united-logoUnited Airlines flight UA-1469 had to divert and make an emergency landing in Las Vegas, Nevada, on September 26th.

    The Boeing 777-200 plane flying from Los Angeles, California, to Newark, New Jersey, was diverted due to smell of smoke in the cockpit.

    The plane landed uneventfully. There were 269 people aboard at the time; all of them remained safe.

    Caribbean Airlines Boeing Crashes in Georgetown Guyana

    What: Caribbean Airlines Boeing 737-832(WL) en route from Trinidad to Timehri
    Where: Cheddi Jagan International Airport,SYCJ,Georgetown,Guyana
    When: July 30, 2011 1:30 am
    Who: 162 aboard 157 passengers, six crews
    Why: Landing in wet weather, the plane made a hard landing, overshot the runway 100 meters, smashed through a perimeter fence and on a perimeter road. It broke in two, the front section splitting ahead of the wing. There were 52 injuries who went to the hospital, 3 with serious injuries who were held over at the hospital, and no fatalities. The worst injury reported was a broken leg. The plane overshot the runway but stopped short of a ravine. Passengers smelled fuel, and opened a door, and climbed through to the wing and jumped down.

    The airport is closed, causing incoming flights to have to divert elsewhere.

    STATEMENT FROM CARIBBEAN AIRLINES
    Port-of-Spain, 30 July 2011, 17.00 HOURS local time: Caribbean Airlines BW523 en route from Port of Spain, Trinidad to Georgetown, Guyana was involved in an incident at the Cheddi Jaggan International Airport at approximately 1:32am today 30 July, 2011.
    There were 157 passengers and 6 crew members on board, all of whom were accounted for.
    A Caribbean Airlines team consisting of technical support staff and executives was dispatched immediately to the accident site to assist passengers, and to work with the local authorities in the emergency response and investigations. The Caribbean Airlines executive team and technical support staff are at the scene to offer full support to the injured in Georgetown. A relatives/customer assistance hotline has been established at our emergency centre in Piarco, and counselling is being provided to passengers and family members.
    A press conference was held earlier today in Georgetown just after midday. In attendance were Chairman- George M. Nicholas III, Head Corporate Communications- Mrs. Laura Asbjornsen, Vice President Operations – Captain Thomas Lawrence and Vice President Maintenance and Engineering – Mr Colville Carrington. It was confirmed that the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority will be spearheading the investigation and will be assisted by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) in the U.S. and the Trinidad and Tobago Civil Aviation Authority (TTCAA).
    The team ensured that its CARE policy for affected passengers and crew was deployed in Georgetown. The airline has engaged the services of a company from the United States, together with regional personnel to implement in accordance with this policy.

    The Federal Aviation Administration announced today it has received ten replacement fuel proposals from producers Afton Chemical Company, Avgas LLC, Shell, Swift Fuels and a consortium of BP, TOTAL and Hjelmco, for further evaluation in the Piston Aviation Fuels Initiative (PAFI). The industry-government initiative is designed to help the general aviation industry transition to an unleaded aviation gasoline. The FAA will be assessing the viability of the candidate fuels to determine which fuels may be part of the first phase of laboratory testing at the FAA’s William J. Hughes Technical Center.

    The goal is to have a new unleaded fuel by 2018.

    “We’re committed to getting harmful lead out of general aviation fuel,” said Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx. “This work will benefit the environment and provide a safe and available fuel for our general aviation community.”

    The 167,000 general aviation aircraft in the US that rely on 100 low lead aviation gasoline for safe operation are running on the only remaining transportation fuel in the United States that contains the addition of lead.

    Commercial planes have never used leaded gas.

    Congress authorized $6 million for the fiscal year 2014 budget to support the PAFI test program at the FAA Technical Center. PAFI was established to facilitate the development and deployment of a new unleaded aviation gasoline with the least impact on the existing piston-engine aircraft fleet.

    The FAA asked fuel producers on June 10, 2013 to submit proposals for replacement fuels by July 1, 2014. The goal is to identify, select, and provide fleetwide certification for fuels determined to have the lowest impact on the general aviation fleet.

    The FAA will analyze the candidate fuels in terms of their impact on the existing fleet, the production and distribution infrastructure, their impact on the environment, their toxicology and the cost of aircraft operations.
