Why: On approach to Toronto, the crew reported a flaps problem. Thirty minutes after declaring emergency, the flight landed safely.

What: Qantas Boeing 737-800 en route from Cairns to Brisbane
Where: Coolangatta

Who: not available
Why: While en route through questionable weather, the plane was struck by lightning. The flight was diverted to Coolangatta/Belinga’s Gold Coast Airport, landing more than half an hour after the original expected arrival time in Brisbane.
Air Canada flight AC-879 had to reject takeoff from Zurich, Switzerland, on February 26th.
The Airbus A330-300 plane was accelerating to takeoff for Toronto, Canada, when the left-hand engine stalled, forcing the crew to reject takeoff.
The plane safely returned to the apron. All two hundred and sixty-eight passengers and eleven crew members remained unharmed.

What: Iberia Airbus A340-600 en route from Madrid, to Santiago
Where: Las Palmas
When: Feb 5th 2010
Why: While en route, it was discovered that the windshield was cracked.
The flight diverted to Las Palmas where it made a safe landing. After the windshield was replaced, the flight departed about 20 hours later

What: GazPromAvia Mil Mi-171 en route from Bovanenkovo to Vorkuta
Where: Vorkuta Russia
When: Dec 19 2009
Who: 22 passengers, 3 crew
Why: The helicopter made an emergency landing–described also as a forced landing, and a rough landing–4 kilometers from where the flight originated. Fourteen were hospitalized.
The incident is under investigation. It is suspected that the cause will be attributed to harsh weather conditions.

What: Lufthansa Cityline Avro RJ-85 en route from Linz Austria to Frankfurt
Where: Linz
When: Nov 29th
Who: 61 passengers and 4 crew
Why: By the time the flight took off, there was smoke not only in the cockpit but also in the cabin. After the plane landed safely, one individual was treated for shock; otherwise there were no injuries reported. The cause of the smoke was not released.

What: Cargo Air Lines Boeing 747-200 en route from New York to Liege Belgium

Why: While en route, the plane noticed an oil pressure problem developing and shut down the afflicted engine. The plane dropped to a lower altitude and returned to JFK where it landed safely. * A cargo flight, no passengers involved.
