    Delta Air Lines Supports Saudi Arabian Airlines’ Application to Join SkyTeam

    ATLANTA, Jan. 10, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) today issued the following statement in support of Saudi Arabian Airlines’ decision to join the SkyTeam global airline alliance in 2012.

  • ERUPTION OF EYJAFJALLA VOLCANO IN ICELAND – ICAO SYSTEM EFFECTIVE IN ENSURING THE SAFETY OF AIR TRANSPORT

    ICAO Release-April 15, 2010-

    The International Airways Volcano Watch (IAVW) system, established by ICAO in coordination with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), proved effective in ensuring the safety of air transport following the eruption of the volcano Eyjafjalla in Iceland on 14 April 2010.

    No incidents or accidents have been reported due to volcanic ash. Disruptions in air traffic, however, are being experienced in the United Kingdom and Scandinavia.

    Since volcanic ash is composed of very abrasive silica materials, it can damage the airframe and flight surfaces, clog different systems, abrade cockpit windows and flame-out jet engines constituting a serious safety hazard. Volcanic ash can also have a serious effect on aerodromes located downwind of a volcanic ash plume since it contaminates runways, ground equipment and aircraft parked or taxiing around the aerodrome.

    The IAVW system is designed to detect and track the movement of volcanic ash in the atmosphere and to warn aircraft in flight about this hazard. The main components of the system are comprised of nine volcanic ash advisory centres responsible for the provision of information related to areas and flight levels affected by volcanic ash and its future movement. These centres are strategically distributed around the globe. They are Anchorage, Buenos Aires, Darwin, London, Montreal, Tokyo, Toulouse, Washington and Wellington. Another important component of the system is the role of area control centres of each State to warn aircraft in flight about the location of the volcanic ash. They work together with selected State Volcano Observatories and the corresponding MET watch offices that are tasked with disseminating the corresponding warnings which are called SIGMETs.

    Airbus delivers the 30th A380

    The 30th A380 to be delivered was handed over today to Emirates Airline, one of the launch customers of the Airbus double-decker aircraft. This is the tenth A380 Emirates has received out of its total firm order for 58 aircraft.

    This aircraft will be on display at the ILA Berlin Air Show which is taking place from June 8th to 13th. Lufthansa will also bring their recently delivered, first A380 to the show and from June 11th an Airbus flight test A380 will be on static and flying display.

    Airbus has already delivered seven A380s so far in 2010, three to Emirates Airline, two to Air France, one to Lufthansa and one to Qantas. Airbus is on track to deliver a total of at least 20 A380s in 2010.

    Today five major airlines, Singapore Airlines, Emirates Airline, Qantas, Air France and Lufthansa, operate 30 A380s on 20 routes linking 18 major international destinations. Together they have carried nearly five and a half million passengers on 15,000 revenue flights and have clocked up almost 140,000 revenue flight hours. These A380 flights have saved 640,000t of CO2 emissions by replacing journeys that would otherwise have been made with less fuel-efficient large aircraft. The A380 has the lowest fuel burn of any wide body aircraft, needing less than three litres of fuel per passenger per 100km.

    The A380 is also a proven profit generator. Delivering an impressive double-digit percentage reduction in cash operating costs, it allows airlines to either increase the number of seats offered at little or no extra cost or keep the same capacity at a much lower total cost. This is one of the reasons why seven of the 17 A380 customers have already placed repeat orders and over half the world’s top international carriers have ordered it.

    Airbus has received 202 firm orders for the A380 from 17 customers.

    Two Boeing 787 Dreamliners to Return to Seattle; Laredo Investigation Continues

    Nov. 16, 2010 /PRNewswire/ — While the investigation into the incident onboard 787 Dreamliner ZA002 continues, Boeing has established a plan to fly two other aircraft, ZA001 and ZA005, back to Seattle from Rapid City, S.D., and Victorville, Calif. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has reviewed and approved the plans.

    ZA001 was undergoing refueling in South Dakota when the incident on ZA002 occurred and the company decided to forgo additional flights. ZA005 was on remote deployment for testing in California.

    The flights follow a series of inspections on the airplanes’ aft electronics bays. No testing will be performed on the flights.

    The team investigating the incident in Laredo has developed a detailed understanding of the ZA002 incident, though more work remains to complete the investigation. In addition to the information already released about the incident, data show that:

    • The total duration of the incident was less than 90 seconds.
    • The fire lasted less than 30 seconds.
    • The airplane concluded the event in a configuration that could have been sustained for the time required to return to an airport suitable for landing from any point in a typical 787 mission profile.  

    The team in Texas has completed inspection of ZA002 and has begun to prepare to install a new power panel and new insulation material. The team also is repairing minor structural damage that occurred during the event. This damage will be addressed with standard repair techniques in the airplane structural repair manual. The team is currently evaluating the timeline for completion of the repair work.

    The incident on ZA002 demonstrated many aspects of the safety and redundancy in the 787 design, which ensure that if events such as these occur, the airplane can continue safe flight and landing.

    No decision has been reached on when flight testing of the 787 will resume. Before that decision can be made, we must complete the investigation and assess whether any design changes are necessary. Until that time, Boeing cannot comment on the potential impact of this incident on the overall program schedule.

    NTSB STUDY SHOWS INTRODUCTION OF ‘GLASS COCKPITS’ IN GENERAL
    AVIATION AIRPLANES HAS NOT LED TO EXPECTED SAFETY
    IMPROVEMENTS

    Washington, DC — Today the National Transportation Safety
    Board adopted a study concluding that single engine
    airplanes equipped with glass cockpits had no better overall
    safety record than airplanes with conventional
    instrumentation.

    The safety study, which was adopted unanimously by the
    Safety Board, was initiated more than a year ago to
    determine if light airplanes equipped with digital primary
    flight displays, often referred to as “glass cockpits,” were
    inherently safer than those equipped with conventional
    instruments.

    The study, which looked at the accident rates of over 8,000
    small piston-powered airplanes manufactured between 2002 and
    2006, found that those equipped with glass cockpits had a
    higher fatal accident rate then similar aircraft with
    conventional instruments.

    The Safety Board determined that because glass cockpits are
    both complex and vary from aircraft to aircraft in function,
    design and failure modes, pilots are not always provided
    with all of the information they need — both by aircraft
    manufacturers and the Federal Aviation Administration — to
    adequately understand the unique operational and functional
    details of the primary flight instruments in their
    airplanes.

    NTSB Chairman Deborah A.P. Hersman highlighted the role that
    training plays in preventing accidents involving these
    airplanes.

    “As we discussed today, training is clearly one of the key
    components to reducing the accident rate of light planes
    equipped with glass cockpits, and this study clearly
    demonstrates the life and death importance of appropriate
    training on these complex systems,” said Hersman. “We know
    that while many pilots have thousands of hours of experience
    with conventional flight instruments, that alone is just not
    enough to prepare them to safely operate airplanes equipped
    with these glass cockpit features.”

    Today, nearly all newly manufactured piston-powered light
    airplanes are equipped with digital primary flight displays.
    And the number of older airplanes being retrofitted with
    these systems continues to grow.

    “While the technological innovations and flight management
    tools that glass cockpit equipped airplanes bring to the
    general aviation community should reduce the number of fatal
    accidents, we have not — unfortunately — seen that happen,”
    said Hersman. “The data tell us that equipment-specific
    training will save lives. To that end, we have adopted
    recommendations today responsive to that data —
    recommendations on pilot knowledge testing standards,
    training, simulators, documentation and service difficulty
    reporting so that the potential safety improvements that
    these systems provide can be realized by the general
    aviation pilot community.”

    Based on the study findings, the NTSB made six safety
    recommendations to the FAA: 1) enhance pilot knowledge and
    training requirements; 2) require manufacturers to provide
    pilots with information to better manage system failures; 3)
    incorporate training elements regarding electronic primary
    flight displays into training materials and aeronautical
    knowledge requirements; 4) incorporate training elements
    regarding electronic primary flight displays into initial
    and recurrent flight proficiency requirements for pilots of
    small light general aviation airplanes equipped with those
    systems, that address variations in equipment design and
    operations of such displays; 5) support equipment-specific
    pilot training programs by developing guidance for the use
    of glass cockpit simulators other than those that are
    approved by the FAA as flight training devices; and 6)
    inform the general aviation community about the importance
    of reporting malfunctions or defects with electronic flight,
    navigation and control systems through the Service
    Difficulty Reporting system.

    HAL and GE Aviation Sign Contract for Hawk Aircraft Components

    Bengaluru, INDIA– GE Aviation and India’s premium public sector Aerospace Company Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) have signed 30-year contract that covers license to carry out repairs and overhaul of various avionics, instruments and hydraulic products for the Hawk Mk132 aircraft, an Advanced Jet Trainer operated by the Indian Air Force.

    This license will provide in-house repair and overhaul capabilities to HAL for GE Aviation products and reduce turn-around-time for the repairs. HAL will build its maintenance, repair and overhaul capabilities at its Bangalore and Korwa facilities in India. The current schedule calls for the Bangalore facility to be certified for repair and overhaul of hydraulics and instruments and the Korwa facility to be certified for avionics.

    As part of the license agreement, GE will develop, supply and commission the test equipment and supply technical data. The agreement also includes training, technical support, post design services for one year, and spares services.

    “HAL has more than 70 years of providing high quality manufacturing, research and development, and repair and overhaul services in India,” said Nalin Jain, country director for GE Aviation. “Adding overhaul for avionics, instruments and hydraulic products is the perfect expansion of HAL’s capabilities.”
