    Blackburn Canyon Cessna Crash, Tehachapi Wildfire


    What: Cessna 210
    Where: Blackburn Canyon, Tehachapi, California
    When: Sept 4, 2011
    Who: 2 aboard, 2 fatalities
    Why: A Cessna that crashed in Blackburn Canyon, Tehachapi, California killed both people aboard the flight and ignited a fire that caused the evacuation of hundreds of homes south of Bakersfield. Two were confirmed dead in the crash, and it has not (yet) been confirmed if there were more than 2 aboard.

    As of Monday, the number of evacuations had grown from 100 to 650 to about 1,500 homes homes. The threatened area was the mountains around the crash and a seven square mile burn area, all threatened by a raging forest fire. Firefighters concentrated on creating a fire-break.

    A DC-10 water tanker has been part of the firefighting team, including 600 firefighters and more than a dozen aircraft.

    Tehachapi, with a population of 8,000, has some renown as an area with wind farms. Smaller fires spread to San Bernardino National Forest and rural areas of San Bernardino County.

    The fire has been 95% contained.

    Dana Air Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Lagos

    Dana Air flight 9J-343 had to return and make an emergency landing in Lagos, Nigeria, on April 21st.

    The plane took off for Port Harcourt, Nigeria, but had to return shortly afterwards due to a bird strike.

    The plane landed safely. All passengers and crew members remained safe.

    Statement on Chinese Approval of 200 Boeing Aircraft

    SEATTLE, Jan. 19, 2011 — Boeing (NYSE: BA) is pleased to have received final approval today from the Chinese Government confirming a $19 billion aircraft agreement.

    China’s approval of airline contracts for 200 orders covers aircraft to be delivered over a three-year period, 2011-2013. The approval helps Boeing maintain and expand its market share in the world’s fastest growing commercial aircraft market. Comprised of 737s and 777s, the agreement positively impacts more than 100,000 jobs including those at Boeing and with its thousands of suppliers throughout the U.S.

    “We value China’s support for our products and its confidence in Boeing,” said Jim Albaugh, president and CEO, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “With the outstanding support provided by the United States Government, this deal is a win-win for the Boeing-China partnership, which is approaching its 40th anniversary.”

    Today, Boeing jets are a mainstay in China’s air travel and cargo system, representing more than 50 percent of all commercial jetliners operating in China. Over the next 20 years, Boeing projects that China will need 4,330 new airplanes, worth more than $480 billion, and will be Boeing’s largest commercial airplane customer.

    Emergency Landing Kuwait City

    What: Kuwait Airways Airbus A300-600 en route from Kuwait City to Dhaka
    Where: Kuwait
    When: Oct 23rd 2010
    Why: After takeoff, the windshield developed a crack. The pilot returned to Kuwait and made a safe landing.

    Conflicting reports:
    According to Mohammed Bursali, Public Relations Director of Kuwait Airways, The windshield was replaced and the flight resumed an hour later. However, a replacement jet arrived four hours later to resume the flight.

    TUI fly Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Munich

    TUI fly flight X3-2158 made an emergency landing in Munich, Germany, on March 3rd.

    The Boeing 737-800 plane took off for Palma, Spain, but had to return shortly afterwards due to a cabin pressure problem.

    The plane landed safely. Everyone aboard remained unharmed.

    Delta Airlines Plane Encounters Turbulence Near LaGuardia Airport

    Delta Airlines flight DL-2056 encountered turbulence near LaGuardia Airport, New York, on February 24th.

    The Airbus A319-100 plane flying from New Orleans, Louisiana, was on final approach to LaGuardia Airport, when it hit turbulence, prompting the crew to go around.

    The plane subsequently landed safely.

    Four passengers were injured in the incident.
