What: IndiGo Airbus A320-200 en route from Guwahati to Kolkata
    Where: Kolkata India
    When: Oct 27 2010
    Who: 169 people on board
Why: 7.30pm on approach to Kolkata, the pilot notified ATC that his plane had developed a problem with the hydraulics, and landing gear problems were ruled out.

The plane made a safe landing at 7:53 pm. Nose gear steering was unavailable, so the plane was towed to the gate. While the plane was stuck on the runway, the airport shut down operations, although not for long. Incoming planes had to circle for less than half an hour.

The next leg of the plane’s itinerary was Chennai; another plane was flown in to accommodate the passengers.

What: Qantas Boeing 767-300 en route from Melbourne to Perth
    Where: Esperance
    When: May 10th 2010
Who: 3 men aboard a life raft
Why: While en route, the flight got a message to assist in keeping an eye on a drifting raft while rescue crews came in to assist. An RAAF Hercules C130 was en route, but had not yet arrived–but the rescue arrived before the Boeing so the Qantas flight continued as usual. The Hercules rescued three survivors from a sunken fishing boat. Their emergency beacon had gone off about 7 a m about 93 nautical miles SW of Esperance. The distress flair had been witnessed by rescue personnel. The nearest boat was 50 miles away.

The owner of the sunken crayfishing boat, Paddy Daniels and his crew Corey Major and Anthony Mansted, were rescued at 1:45pm after a harrowing day in freezing conditions on the life raft. They had boarded it with a hurried selection of supplies at 6 a m after discovering the boat taking on water.

    Cypress Street Crash

Footage right after the crash. The neighborhood is close to the airport.

COMPTON CA — On West Cypress Street, a twin-engine Cessna 310 collided with three homes. Five individuals were injured, including the pilot, two passengers and two on the ground. All five victims were taken to area hospitals and are expected to survive.

The crash occurred after the plane experienced complications and losing power. The cause has not yet been determined.

After clipping a house, the right wing detached, then the craft cartwheeled down the street over a second home and landed nose down through the roof of a third house.

One of the homeowners was at home washing dishes at the time of the crash and sustained a fractured jaw and broken bones. The plane’s passengers are in critical condition, and the pilot can’t give an accounting. The cause is under investigation by the FAA and NTSB, with both reports expected by December 2008.

Small Plane Crashes near Ardmore Airport, New Zealand

Cessna2A light aircraft crashed in a paddock around 3.5 km east of the aerodrome at the Ardmore Airport, Auckland, New Zealand, on June 29.

The incident happened just before 1:45 p.m., after the engine of the Airline Flying Club Cessna 152 failed. The aircraft was severely damaged after it skidded 200 meters across the paddock into a drain, and ended up on its roof.

The female pilot, who was just in her 20s, and her female student suffered minor injuries. Both of them were taken to Middlemore Hospital by ambulance.

Phil Welcome, the chief flying instructor at Airline Flying Club, appreciated the skill of the newly recruited pilot and said “It looks like she’s done an excellent job, and the only problem is at the end of her take-off run she’s encountered a drainage ditch.”

Welcome said a team of engineers would check the aircraft to find out the cause of the engine failure. He said “In these airplanes, engine failure is actually very, very rare.”

Senior Sergeant Ian Brenchley responded at the scene and started investigation on behalf of the Civil Aviation Authority.
