What: American Eagle Embraer ERJ-135 en route from Toronto to New York Where: Toronto When: Jun 6th 2010 Why: After takeoff, the plane developed a leak and shut down an engine. The flight diverted to Elmira where they made a safe landing minus one engine.
What: Chartered flight en route from Chandigarh to Shimla Where: Chandigarh When: June 6, 2010 Who: pilot, co pilot Why: The plane flew successfully to Shimla airport to pick up VIP passengers but could not land, so it returned to Chandigarh. The problem is reported to be an undisclosed problem in the engine–although the runway at Shimla has been damaged due to erosion and has shrunken from 4,100 to 3,800 feet. The crew made it safely back to Chandigarh for a safe landing
What: Ultralight en route to Ozzano of the Emilia Where: Rogno Italy When: June 6 2010 Who: Pilot and passenger Why: The ultralight developed problems on takeoff, and crashed near an Artogne airstrip. Passenger Ivan Belotti, resident of Cevo Brescia died in the crash. The pilot, Alan Planeti of Esine Brescia has been hospitalized in serious condition.
What: CRIT Helicópteros Bell 206 Where: Atizapan , Mexico When: June 6 2010 Who: 3 injured Why: On 11 Maple drive in the Hidden Valley golf club (el club de golf Valle Escondido), the Bell Helicopter crashed for unknown reasons. Pilot Gerardo Alberto Lujano González, and crew Eduardo Rodriguez Vértiz and Gabriel Brito Macías were taken to the Angels of Huixquilucan hospital with undisclosed injuries. The helicopter has been written off as damaged beyond repair but there were no fatalities.
What: Air India Airbus A320-200 en route from Kozhikode to Dubai (or from Calicut to Sharjah depending on who you ask.) Where: Mumbai When: May 28th 2010 Who: 84 passengers and 8 crew Why: While en route, the flight developed hydraulic failure and had to divert to Mumbai where they made a safe landing. A replacement jet was provided, for which passengers waited for three and a half hours. The diversion is considered cautionary and not “emergency.”
What: American Airlines Boeing 757-200 en route from Boston to Paris Where: (over Atlantic) Gander When: Jun 2nd 2010 Why: While en route, the flight experienced problems with their standby battery recharging system. (The battery is essential to standby power in an emergency situation. ) The flight diverted to Gander where it made a safe overweight landing. A replacement jet was provided.
What: SAS Scandinavian Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-82 on a ferry flight from Lourdes to Oslo Where: Belgium When: Jun 3rd 2010 Who: 3 crew members Why: After takeoff, a piece of a tail fin was found on the runway. The crew performed a flyby for ATC to perform a visual inspection. Nothing irregular was found by ATC or by the crew so they continued the flight, but diverted to Stockholm for inspection.
What: Hawaiian Airlines Boeing 717-200 en route from Honolulu to Kahului Where: Honolulu When: Jun 3rd 2010 Who: 117 people on board, Why: After takeoff, smoke was seen coming from the plane’s engine, and the crew observed irregular indications. The flight returned to Honolulu for maintenance. A replacement jet was provided.
What: Air Canada Airbus A319-100 en route from Victoria,BC to Toronto,ON Where: Calgary When: Jan 10th 2008 Who: 83 passengers and 5 crew Why: Over Washington state, the Airbus which was following a UA Boeing at at least the minimum approved distance was subjected to an interim of wake turbulence which seriously injured 3 and caused minor injuries to 8. Findings on this 2008 event included the cause as wake turbulence. The event brings to question trolley and storage security and rudder control input.
What: AirTran Airways Boeing 737-700 en route from San Francisco to Atlanta Where: Wichita When: May 31 2010 Who: 126 passengers and crew Why: While en route, the flight developed oil pressure problems due to an oil leak and diverted to Wichita Kansas where it made a safe landing. A replacement flight was provided for the passengers.
What: Canadian North Boeing 737-200 en route from St. John’s NL to Winnipeg Where: Fredericton When: May 25 2010 Who: 31 people on board, Why: While en route, the left engine developed developed oil pressure issues and had to be shut down. The flight diverted to Fredericton and made a safe landing.
What: United Airlines Boeing 777-200 en route from London Heathrow to Los Angeles,CA Where: Montreal When: May 25th 2010 Who: 96 passengers and 15 crew Why: While en route, over the Hudson Strait, the flight encountered turbulence, injuring one stewardess and five passengers. The flight nearly diverted to O’Hare but instead diverted to Montreal, where the injured were hospitalized. A replacement Boeing was provided-
What: Spicejet Boeing 737-800 en route from New Delhi to Srinagar India Where: Delhi When: May 24th 2010 Who: 188 passengers Why: After a normal takeoff, the crew was advised to return due to debris on the runway. After a flyby during which tire damage was observed, the Spicejet flight made a safe landing. Repairs were made and the flight took off again four hours later. No indication is made of passenger accommodation.
What: Air India Express Boeing 737-800 en route from Dubai to Mangalore Where: Mangalore airport When: 6:00 a.m May 22 2010 Who: 160 (?) passengers including 23 children, 6 crew= 158 fatalities and 8 survivors Why: Air India Express flight 812 attempted touch down was around the middle marker. (Conflicting) reports are that it overshot the runway, and that the pilot intended a go round (tapes reveal the co pilot was urging a go-round) but the plane hit the localizer antenna at the runway’s end, plowed through the perimeter losing part of a wing, and went down 75 feet into a ravine, and broke into pieces and burst into flames. On touchdown, there was a reported “bang” which may have been a tire bursting. A drizzle started after the accident. From 5 to 10 people have been hospitalized, but according to reports there are possibly 3 survivors.
Survivor Abdul Puttur suffered burns. He was seated near the wing exit and said that the pilot had announced the landing, then there was a thud. He saw huge flames after the plane fell into the ravine and then he jumped out from the back entrance. Another passenger said the pilot made no announcement.
The Serbian pilot was Zlatko Glusica, first officer was S.S. Ahluwalia.
According to DGCA rules, Mangalore International Airport is deemed a “critical airfield” which means that “supervised take offs and landings” are prohibited. Only the captain (not the first officer) can pilot take-offs and landings. Mangalore International Airport has a controversial table top runway and which forces pilots to make a precision landing. The airport has no buffer zone, and pilots landing planes must fly precisely or risk hurtling off the edge.
What: Cimber Air Aerospatiale ATR-72-500 en route from Copenhagen to Aalborg Where: Kastrup Airport, Copenhagen When: May 18th 2010 Who: 63 passengers and 4 crew Why: After takeoff, the plane lost a nose wheel when a wheel fell off after an axle broke. The plane returned to land at Kastrup. The landing was safe, and the passengers were rebooked on a subsequent flight.
What: Transaero Boeing 737-500 en route from Moscow to Krasnodar Where: Moscow When: May 19th 2010 Who: 87 passengers Why: While en route, the crew received an indication of low hydraulic pressure. The flight returned to Moscow and made a safe landing. Passengers were booked onto other flights.
What: Travel Service Boeing 737-800 en route from Sharm el Sheikh Egypt to Prague Where: Cairo When: May 17th 2010 Who: 160 passengers Why: While en route, the flight crew found indication of a wheel well fire and diverted to Prague. The flight landed safely, and the indication proved to be groundless, causing only a minor delay at the airport.

What: Lion Air Robinson R44 Raven II helicopter Where: Jael Subdivision in Barangay Iyam, south of Lucena City, Philippines When: MAY 17, 2010 Who: 4 aboard the flight, and two or three on the ground including Rowena Navales (14) 7 fatalities in all. Why: The Lion Air helicopter had just taken off. A scant 300 feet later, the chopper swerved, the propeller stopped spinning, and the helicopter slammed into three houses in a neighborhood 70 miles south of Manila. The fire spread to five houses. There were two or three fatalities on the ground, possibly all children, in addition to those aboard the flight.
Aboard were Quezon Gov. Rafael Nantes,his military escort Master Sergeant Alfred Dominguez, police escort Police Officer Randy Roferez, and the pilot identified as Nestor Sanchez.
The crash is being attributed to mechanical problems.
What: United Airlines Boeing 757-200 en route from New York to Los Angeles Where: Washington When: May 16th 2010 Who: 105 passengers and 7 crew Why: While en route, the crew discovered a fire in the cockpit in the power wires to the windshield heaters. The crew put out the flames, and diverted to Dulles where they made a safe landing. No mention of how the passengers were handled; but this is a known problem with the windshield heaters.
What: Pamir Airways Antonov AN-24 en route from Kundus to Kabul Afghanistan Where: Kabul on May 17th 2010 When: May 17th 2010 Who: 38 passengers and 6 crew Why: Lost connection with ATC 40 minutes from the airport. The wreckage, found at Salang Pass, displayed no sign of life.
What: Pamir Airways Antonov 24B en route from Kunduz to Kabul Where: Salang Pass (Afghanistan) When: May 17, 2010 Who: 5 crew 38 passengers Why: While embarking on a flight in poor weather, the plane disappeared from radar while en route. The wreckage was found in a mountainous region (Salang Pass.) Recovery efforts are impeded by location, and current weather conditions which are snowy/rainy.
What: Delta Airlines Boeing 767-300 en route from New York NY to Amsterdam Netherlands Where: 150nm north of Halifax,NS When: May 13th 2010 Why: While en route, the plane developed oil pressure problems and had to shut down an engine. They diverted to Halifax and made a cautionary landing.
Delta provided a replacement plane for the passengers within a few hours.
What: Blue Wing Airlines Antonov 28 passenger plane en route from Godo Holo Airstrip to Paramaribo-Zorg en Hoop Airport Where: Upper-marowijne district 3 miles north-east of Pokisi, Suriname. When: May 15, 2010 Who: 2 crew including pilot Peter Veldkamp, 6 passengers employed by IAMGOLD mining company, 8 fatalities Why: Ten miles into the flight, the plane lost radio contact. The last message reporting the plane encountered bad weather. The plane disappeared in bad weather on the 15th, in a forest 200 miles southeast of Paramaribo, near the Tapanahony River where it is presumed the plane was flying (off course) to try to fly around the weather. Since then, search parties have been able to fly over the wreckage and confirm it a total loss
What: Aer Lingus Airbus A330-200, registration en route from Orlando, to Dublin Where: Orlando When: Dublin Who: 245 passengers and 11 crew Why: Just after takeoff, the left engine of the Airbus had a large oil loss and was subsequently shut down. The flight returned to the airport half an hour later and made a safe landing. Passengers were provided hotel accommodations and booked on alternative flights the next day.
What: AeroMexico Connect Embraer ERJ-145 en route from San Antonio to Mexico City Where: Ciudad Victoria When: May 13th 2010 Who: 31 passengers Why: The Aeromexico Connect had a fire alert in a cargo compartment. They diverted to Ciudad Victoria where they made a safe landing. A replacement jet was flown in the next day. Also, the fire alert appeared to be a groundless indicator error; no fire was found.
