    Helicopter Hard Landing in Oregon

    What: Hillsboro Aviation Robinson R22
    Where: quarter mile south of the Hillsboro Airport, east of the Washington County Fairgrounds
    When: Jun 19th, 2010 8:40 pm
    Who: pilot and passenger
    Why: On approach to the airport, the pilot lost power and attempted an emergency field landing. The helicopter flipped on landing, but the pilot and passenger were unhurt.

    Cloud Nine Emergency Landing, Palm Beach

    What: Cloud 9 Helicopters Flight Training School Robinson 22
    Where: Palm Beach Gardens, North Palm Beach County
    When: June 19 2010
    Who: Pilot and trainee
    Why: On a training flight, equipment caught on fire and the helicopter had to make an emergency landing on Aviation Boulevard. The helicopter flipped but both the pilot and trainee “walked away.”

    Candy Bomber Emergency Landing in Berlin

    What: Air Service Berlin Douglas C-47 Skytrain, Vintage DC3 “Rosinenbomber”
    Where: Berlin’s Schoenefeld airport
    When: June 19, 2010
    Who: 3 crew, 25 tourists, 7 injuries
    Why: After the left engine failed, the DC3 made an emergency landing at Schoenefeld airport in Berlin. The flight made a safe landing. The plane was part of a 1948-49 fleet that carried supplies during the Berlin Airlift, and is now used to shuttle tourists.

    On landing, the right wing and engine separated resulting in a small fire.

  • Emergency Landing in Wisconsin

    What: plane en route from Sheboygan (Nascar race) to California (another Nascar race)
    Where: Chippewa Valley Regional Airport, Eau Claire WI
    When: June 19 2010
    Who:
    Why: While attempting a landing, the landing gear apparently failed; the pilot did a flyby on the ground to check the gear, after which the plane circled for 45 minutes to burn off fuel. The flight landed safely with fire crews on standby. The passengers planned to take an alternative flight to the Nascar race in CA.

    Who: 31 year old pilot
    Why: In west yorkshire, the plane crashed near the river Aire, killing the pilot.

    Cessna tree-strike

    What: Oasis Flight Services. twin engine Cessna en route to Plymouth Municipal Airport
    Where: PLYMOUTH, Mass
    When: June 19 2010,5:15 p.m.
    Who: three aboard
    Why: After surveying, the Cessna was en route to the airport when it got stuck in a tree in a Plymouth neighborhood. No one was injured.

    Why: The ultralight crashed at 9:30 a.m.. The pilot was was flown by helicopter to Fort Worth’s John Peter Smith Hospital

    Emergency Landing in NJ

    What: single-engine Siai Marchetti F260
    Where: Somerset Airport
    When: June 18 2010; 2:30 p.m.
    Who: 67-year-old Kenneth Pelich of Oak Ridge
    Why: While attempting to land at Somerset airport, the landing gear failed. The pilot made a safe landing without the landing gear, although the belly landing skidded off the runway. The pilot was unhurt.

    New Mexico Cessna Crash

    What: Rod Aviation twin-engine Cessna 310 en route from Cleburne Muncipal Airport to Ruidoso
    Where: near the Sierra Blanca Airport, which is located about 18 miles northeast of Ruidoso
    When: June 17 2010 @ 9:50 a.m
    Who: fatalities: Rodney and DeLaine Duree, both 50, and their son, Lake, Karl Richey, 46, and his wife, Kaeri, 44. Hospitalized: Richeys’ sons, Alexander, 16, and Christopher, 12.
    Why: The flight crashed while attempting to land and caused a forest fie which has now been contained. The purpose of the flight was to scatter a relative’s ashes in New Mexico.

    Ethiopia Flight Makes Cautionary Landing

    What: Ethiopian airplane Boeing 737-800 Flight 407 en route from Addis Ababa to Beirut
    Where: Beirut International Airport
    When: June 17 2010
    Who: 78 passengers
    Why: The flight returned to the airport because of an “undisclosed technical problem.” Crew noticed a door was rattling and had been closed improperly. (It is unclear if that was the technical problem.) The flight made a safe landing. The same plane was cleared for takeoff six hours later.

    Illegal Flight Ends in Colombia

    What: Cessna T210L en route from Medellín, Antioquia, Colombia to Quibdó, Colombia
    Where: Puente Iglesias, Fredonia Colombia
    When: June 15, 2010
    Who: 2 fatalities
    Why: Near Puente Iglesias, the illegal flight was lost at dusk over the Cauca river; no trace of the crew was found. Searchers found a bag containing 57 kilos of cocaine aboard. Witnesses to the crash said the crew had been seen on the plane in the river, but there had not been time to reach them before the plane sank in the river. Rescuers are looking for the bodies along the river.

    Jet Blue Airbus Diverts to Nassau

    What: JetBlue Airbus 320 en route from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to San Juan, Puerto Rico
    Where: Nassau
    When: June 16th, 2010
    Why: While en route the crew smelled fumes in the cabin. They diverted to Nassau, the Bahamas where they made a safe landing. A replacement jet was called for the stranded passengers which was scheduled to take off before 6:00 pm.

    An investigation has been launched to determine the source of the smoke.

    Aussie Med-Evac Piper Crashes near School

    Where: Canley Vale Road, Australia

    Who: 2 aboard, 28-year-old pilot Andrew Wilson and a female nurse on board, both fatalities
    Why: After takeoff, the flight developed engine failure. Unable to gain altitude, the pilot reported he would be returning to Bankstown, but plane crashed on Canley Vale Road near Sydney just outside of the ATC three mile boundary. The pilot had been engaged in several minutes of conversation with ATC.

    After the crash, the pilot and nurse were fatally injured. A car transporting one adult and three children was hit with crash debris; and the home belonging to Kevin Huynh caught on fire. 5 on the ground were hospitalized.

    Delta Emergency Landing in Lexington

    Where: Blue Grass Airport
    When: Jun 15, 2010
    Who: 77 passengers and crew aboard
    Why: While en route, the flight encountered severe turbulence. The flight diverted to Lexington where it made a safe landing at the Blue Grass Airport. The flight continued at 8:20 with no further hinderance.

    Alitalia Hot Landing in Boston

    What: Alitalia Airbus 330 en route from Boston to Rome
    Where: Boston
    When: June 15, 2010
    Who: 250 passengers and crew
    Why: After takeoff, the Airbus made an emergency landing at Logon Airport after the number one engine caught on fire.

    The flight made a safe landing.

    What: Aeroservicios Milenio Cessna 208B Grand Caravan en route from Felipe Carrillo Puerto to Chetumal
    Where: Quintana Roo
    When: June 14, 2010
    Who: 8 aboard, 8 fatalities including Captain Salvador Aguilar and his copilot, security agent Fernando Marchan, Oscar Esquivel; Jesús Garmendia; Mauri Magaña; Daniel Pacheco, and social managment assistant Katy Rodríguez.
    Why: A few moments after takeoff, the small plane full of the campaign staff of Roberto Borge Angulo crashed in the Quintana Roo area.

    Members of the Mexican army have surrounded and secured the area.
    The candidate who was not aboard, is now in mourning.

    Singapore: Jetstar makes 2nd Pass

    Where: Singapore on May 26th 2010
    When: May 26th 2010
    Who: 167 passengers
    Why: On approach to Singapore, the flight had to make a second go-round due to a warning. The flight landed safely. Allegations have been made that the pilot was “texting” at the time.

    Dubious about the report of “texting.” I find it highly unlikely that the pilot was texting. If that were the case, we’d have already heard about how he was fired. It is highly unlikely that Jetstar would tolerate that behavior.

    Piper Crashes AZ School Before Town Hall

    What: Piper PA-28 Cherokee en route from Springerville Airport
    Where: Eagar Arizona
    When: June 11, 2010
    Who: originally 2 bodies reported, 4 found aboard by NTSB.
    Why: The plane circled Round Valley High School two or three times before it crashed into the unoccupied main building at about 2 p.m. Several adults and children were in the auditorium, setting up for the 6 pm town hall. State Sen. Carolyn Allen and former state Sen. Russell Bowers had been there earlier but had already left.

    The immediate neighborhood was evacuated because of the fire.

    Helicopter enGulfed

    What: Petroleum Helicopter Inc. Bell 206
    Where: 43 miles into the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Port O’Connor
    When: June 10, 2010
    Who: Pilot and two passengers. One passenger was injured.
    Why: While en route, the helicopter crashed into the gulf of Mexico. The coast guard was notified at 10:40 a.m, but an offshore private vessel, named OSV Callie Jean picked up those who had been aboard the helicopter fifteen minutes after the crash, before the coastguard arrived. The passengers were taken to an oil rig platform, from which they were airlifted to the mainland.

    Piper Emergency Landing in Czech Republic

    Where: Hradec Kralove airfield Czech Republic
    When: June 11 2010
    Who: pilot Laco Nagy and passenger Milan Nejedlý
    Why: After on an aerial photography mission, the plane had problems retracting landing gear but after circling for three hours to burn off fuel, landed safely on foam in the airfield. Thirty rescue workers and seven fire tankers were on standby. Nagy, a former military pilot is credited with a masterful landing.

    Hot Delta Flight Lands Safely

    What: Delta Airlines Boeing 767-300 en route from New York to Rome
    Where: Halifax
    When: Jun 10 2010
    Who: 214 aboard
    Why: While en route over the Atlantic, smoke was found on board. The flight diverted to Halifax where they made a safe landing. A replacement jet was provided. There’s no indication (yet) as to the cause of the smoke.

    Cautionary Landing in Dammam

    What: Saudi Arabian Airlines Boeing 777-200 en route from Dammam to Kochi
    Where: Muscat
    When: Jun 7th 2010
    Why: After developing instrument problems while en route, the crew turned around and returned to Dammam where they made a safe landing two hours into the flight. The plane underwent repairs before resuming the flight.

    Tragic Yakovlev Yak-52 Crash Kills 2

    What: DOSAAF Yakovlev Yak-52
    Where: Yalutorovsk Russia
    When: June 7 2010
    Who: pilot and passenger.
    Why: A plane belonging to the “DOSAAF” flight club crashed during a training exercise. After impact, the plane caught on fire. Both individuals aboard incurred fatal injuries. No other details have been released.

    Royal Air Maroc Loses Bird Encounter

    What: Royal Air Maroc Boeing 737-400 en route from Amsterdam to Nador
    Where: Amsterdam
    When: Jun 6th 2010
    Who: 156 passengers and 6 crew
    Why: On takeoff, the plane encountered a flock of geese, which resulted in an engine fire, damage to the left engine fan blade and denting the inlet. The engine was shut down, fire suppression engaged, and the crew returned to the airport where they made a safe landing. Passengers disembarked on the runway after less than a twenty minute flight.

    Why: After takeoff, the crew had a technical problem, was alerted to landing gear doors open, and made a flyby to visually determine the doors were open. The plane landed safely No mention if the initial technical problem was the open doors or some other matter.
