    Air Tanzania Runway Overrun

What: Air Tanzania de Havilland Canada DHC-8-311Q en route from Kigoma to Dar es Salaam via Tabora
    Where: Kigoma
    When: Apr 9th 2012
Who: 35 passengers and 4 crew
Why: Air Tanzania was taking off from Kigoma when it suffered an engine failure. Two passengers were hospitalized with shock but there were no other injuries reported.

    Pilots rejected takeoff.

The jet overran the runway. Local news reported that the pilots “hit a pothole” which prevented the takeoff. It is not unusual for us to end up with conflicting reasons behind accidents. We do not know if the runway was soft after recent rains. It is up to the official investigation to reveal what happened. We are just delighted that the pilots landed the plane with no loss of life or serious injury.

The right engine separated, and the right wing incurred some damage; the nose gear collapsed. The plane has been written off with substantial damage. Unless Air Tanzania tells us otherwise, we believe this is the last de Havilland Canada DHC-8 in the fleet.

Mangalore: Two Pilot Tales, Which is true?

There are two accounts of the Pilot Alexander Glusicia’s situation prior to the Mangalore-Dubai-Mangalore flight. We wonder which of these versions is true.

    1. Alexander (Zlatko) Glusica was initially not rostered by Air India to fly on the day of the crash— not scheduled to fly till May 23.. His schedule had last minute changes, when Glusica was asked to fly though he was fatigued, having just returned from a Serbian vacation.

    2. Capt Glusica had landed in Mangalore two days in advance, and was plenty rested prior to flying.
Officials claim the family had opportunity to appear before the Court of Inquiry but they never came.

    Where: West Kalimantan, Indonesia
    When: Nov 2 2010
    Who: 167 passengers, 7 crew
Why: While landing at Pontianak’s Supadio Airport during a heavy rain, the plane overran the end of the runway. Its nose and main undercarriage collapsed and it stopped mired in a field beyond the end of the runway. There were no injuries.

A passenger reported that the plane shook (or vibrated) about a quarter of an hour before landing; and no announcements were made by the pilot or crew during the vibration, or during the landing. The airline said no announcement was made because the seatbelt light was on.

Passengers panicked and evacuated through an emergency exit. Military personnel at the airport assisted.

Where were the crew while terrified passengers were jumping off the plane?

They are saying the plane’s inability to stop was not due to weather, a wet runway, that the plane was well maintained and that it was a normal landing. So. If this is all true, why did it overrun?
