What: Ural Airlines Airbus A321-200 en route from Dubai (United Arab Emirates) to Ekaterinburg (Russia)
Where: Ekaterinburg
When: Nov 6 2010 at 4:25
Who: 143 passengers and 8 crew
Why: While landing at Ekaterinburg while the runway was covered in ice, and although ATC informed the “that the runway condition was good and permitted a safe landing,” the plane did not respond to proper braking and overran the runway.

Russian investigators are investigating.

Apparently Russian airport crews don’t bother to salt, plow or otherwise make their runways more safe. Or maybe this was just a particularly lazy crew.

China Eastern Airlines Flight Diverts to Russia due to Engine Problem

China Eastern Airlines flight MU-552 had to divert and make an emergency landing in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, on February 15th.

The Airbus A330-200 plane heading from Heathrow Airport, England, to Shanghai, China, was diverted due to an engine issue.

The plane landed safely. All 186 passengers and 17 crew members remained unharmed.

Allegiant Lands after Engine Fire

What: Allegiant Air McDonnell Douglas MD-83 en route from Billings to Mesa
Where: Flagstaff
When: Jul 25th 2010
Who: 144 passengers and 6 crew
Why: While en route, the right engine indicated a fire. Pilots shut it down and diverted to Flagstaff where they made a safe landing.

Some passengers who incurred minor injuries while evacuating down the emergency slide were hospitalized.

Delta Airbus Emergency Landing in Detroit

What: Delta Airlines Airbus A320-200 en route from Detroit to Denver
Where: Lake Michigan
When: Feb 28 2010
Why: While en route, the left engine developed problems and was shut down. The flight returned to Denver and made a safe landing on the remaining engine.

Delta DC-9 Suffers Uncontained Engine Failure

What: Delta Airlines Douglas DC-9-50 en route from Atlanta to Pittsburgh
Where: Atlanta o
When: Aug 6th 2011
Why: On takeoff approach, the right engine made a banging noise, leading the pilots to reject takeoff, and stop on the runway, with locked up brakes and an uncontained engine failure (holes in the casing) and a disengaged fan blade. Passengers disembarked on to the runway and were ported to the terminal.

Delta Airlines Plane Makes Emergency Landing in Amsterdam

Delta Airlines flight DL-56 made an emergency landing in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on June 21st.

The Airbus A330-200 plane was flying from Salt Lake City, Utah, when the crew reported a hydraulic issue.

The plane continued for a safe landing. There were two hundred and sixteen people aboard at the time; all of them remained safe.
