    Boeing 787 First Flight Event Wins PRSA Silver Anvil

    SEATTLE, June 4, 2010 – The Boeing Commercial Airplanes Communications & Marketing team received a 2010 Silver Anvil award from the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) Thursday for its work in planning and executing communications events surrounding the 787 Dreamliner first flight on Dec. 15, 2009.

    PRSA – the largest professional association serving the public relations industry – awards Silver Anvils each year to organizations that successfully address a contemporary issue with exemplary professional skill, creativity and resourcefulness. According to the PRSA website, this national award represents the “best of the best” in public relations practices.

    The Boeing Communications & Marketing team began planning a year in advance of the event, which drew more than 12,000 employees and guests. The team also facilitated the company’s first live webcast, allowing more than 1 million people around the globe to share in the historic first flight and landing of the Dreamliner.
    “This was a team of literally hundreds of volunteers who created a memorable event worthy of the 787 Dreamliner,” said Yvonne Leach, 787 Communications director, at the acceptance ceremony. “It was an honor to have led the team that planned and delivered this event.”

    The Silver Anvil award recognized the team for deploying new technologies to open the first-flight experience to employees, media, customers, government officials and other stakeholders. These innovations included hosting micro events around the world; providing audio feed between air traffic control and 787 first-flight pilots Mike Carriker and Randy Neville during the flight; and allowing Web visitors to track the flight live on Boeing.com.

    “Those who attended first flight in person or watched it on the Web will never forget the rush of emotion when that airplane left the ground and became airborne,” said Leach. “It was a great moment for Boeing, for our customer, our partners and employees – for our entire industry.”

    Jade Cargo Selects Boeing Airplane Health Management

    SEATTLE, June 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — The Boeing Airplane Health Management (AHM) system will monitor Jade Cargo’s fleet of six 747-400 Freighter airplanes, under an agreement announced today. AHM is an information-driven system that helps airlines improve the management of unscheduled maintenance events.

    “I believe AHM can extremely improve efficiency and reliability in our flight operation,” said Jade Cargo International CEO and Captain Kay Kratky upon signing the agreement. “I am looking forward to more cooperation with Boeing.”

    Jade Cargo will incorporate all three AHM modules into its operation — Real-Time Fault Management, Performance Monitoring and Custom Alerting and Analysis.

    “This is a big commitment by Jade Cargo to improve efficiency, maintenance performance and overall fleet awareness,” said Dennis Floyd, vice president of Fleet Services for Commercial Aviation Services, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “We look forward to Airplane Health Management making a significant difference in the airline’s operation.”

    The Real-Time Fault Management module communicates in-flight information to ground stations for diagnosis and real-time operational decisions to initiate any needed maintenance operations and deploy the necessary people, parts and equipment.
    Performance Monitoring will allow Jade Cargo to analyze airplane performance data to improve airplane fuel efficiency and flight planning.

    Custom Alerting and Analysis enables the airline to address developing airplane system issues by automatically monitoring, collecting, and transmitting service level information including tire pressure, oxygen pressure, hydraulic fluid, Auxiliary Power Unit and engine oil levels. Consumption trends are then used to facilitate maintenance planning and optimize service intervals.

    Airplane Health Management works through the MyBoeingFleet.com portal. Alerts and notifications are delivered to airline personnel through the Internet, fax, personal digital assistants, e-mail and pager services.
    Airplane Health Management is a key component in Boeing’s larger vision of the e-enabled airline, where information technology, connectivity and strategic integration promise greater efficiency and improved airline operations.

    Boeing, Canadian Industry Partners Launch Advanced Composites Manufacturing Research and Development Consortium

    OTTAWA, Ontario, June 1, 2010 — The Boeing Company and Canadian industry partners today announced the launch of a new research and development consortium aimed at strengthening Canada’s competitive position in the manufacturing of advanced composite materials for aerospace and other industries.

    The Canadian Composites Manufacturing Research and Development consortium (CCMRD) brings together major aerospace companies and small- to medium-sized enterprises to develop and transform the latest technical and academic knowledge into practical solutions that will enhance Canada’s global competitiveness.

    “A virtual R&D center of this type is much needed in Canada,” said Anoush Poursartip, CCMRD chairman and Research director for Convergent Manufacturing Technologies, a member company. “The CCMRD will help to advance the technological capabilities of Canadian industry whilst building stronger relationships between Canadian and international aerospace original equipment manufacturers, as well as Canadian material, equipment, component and software suppliers.”

    The CCMRD was formed in cooperation with the Composites Innovation Centre (CIC) in Winnipeg, National Research Council Canada’s Institute for Aerospace Research (NRC-IAR) in Ottawa, and The Boeing Company. Founding Canadian member companies include Bell Helicopter and Avior Integrated Products in Quebec; Comtek Advanced Structures in Ontario; Convergent Manufacturing Technologies and Profile Composites in British Columbia; and Bristol Aerospace, a division of Magellan Aerospace Ltd. and Cormer Group Industries Inc. in Manitoba.

    The CIC is responsible for CCMRD administration, with projects to be carried out at member companies across Canada. NRC-IAR will participate as a technology adviser, providing insight and direction based on its leading-edge knowledge of the composites aerospace industry.

    In addition to financial support, Boeing will provide technical expertise and project guidance through its central research, technology and innovation organization, Boeing Research & Technology. Boeing Canada Operations Ltd. in Winnipeg will take part in CCMRD projects along with other consortium members.

    Boeing to Feature New Super Hornet Cockpit Display at CANSEC

    OTTAWA, Ontario, June 1, 2010 – Boeing [NYSE: BA] will demonstrate a new, larger cockpit display as part of its F/A-18 Super Hornet simulator at the CANSEC 2010 defense and security trade show. The exhibition will be held June 2-3 in Ottawa.

    The new display is a single-screen configuration that enables aircrews to view more battlespace information within a larger viewing area.

    “The new, larger display is an option Super Hornet customers will be able to incorporate as they determine specific capabilities for their unique requirements,” said Mike Gibbons, F/A-18E/F program manager for Boeing. “This new display is one example of the evolutionary approach of incorporating ever-increasing capabilities into the Super Hornet, with low risk for customers. We continue to expand the Super Hornet’s multirole capabilities with continued on-cost and on-schedule performance for our customers.”

    The Boeing Super Hornet is a multirole aircraft, able to perform virtually every mission in the tactical spectrum, including air superiority, day/night strike with precision-guided weapons, fighter escort, close air support, suppression of enemy air defenses, maritime strike, reconnaissance, forward air control and tanker missions. Boeing has delivered more than 430 F/A-18E/Fs to the U.S. Navy. Every Super Hornet produced has been delivered on or ahead of schedule and on budget.

    Boeing also is bringing the P-8A Poseidon demonstration trailer, which includes operator stations and a cockpit simulator, to CANSEC. A derivative of the highly successful and reliable Next-Generation 737, the P-8 is a long-range anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft.     Boeing Conducts Test Flight

    ST. LOUIS, May 26, 2010 — The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] successfully flew its ScanEagle Compressed Carriage (SECC) unmanned airborne system (UAS) at a testing facility in eastern Oregon on May 12. The 75-minute flight evaluated the aircraft’s airworthiness and flight characteristics in a simulated intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) mission.

    The SECC — powered by a six-horsepower, heavy-fuel engine — was launched from a ground vehicle, flew an autonomous flight plan at various altitudes and provided streaming video from its electro-optical/infrared sensor package to a nearby ground station. The SECC was recovered using the same runway-independent SkyHook recovery system used by the ScanEagle and Integrator unmanned airborne systems. The SECC system will complete additional tests in the coming months.

    “This is a big step toward adding another aircraft with additional capabilities to Boeing’s UAS stable,” said Ron Perkins, director of Boeing Phantom Works’ Advanced Unmanned Airborne Systems. “The vehicle’s 132-inch wingspan and folding aero surfaces allow it to be carried on an aircraft pylon or in a container, giving the warfighter the choice of operating it from air, underwater, ground or surface platforms.”

    The SECC is a long-endurance, autonomous UAS designed to provide ISR, targeting, and battle-damage assessment.

    Why: After a normal takeoff, the crew was advised to return due to debris on the runway. After a flyby during which tire damage was observed, the Spicejet flight made a safe landing.     Who: 160 (?) passengers including 23 children, 6 crew= 158 fatalities and 8 survivors
    Why: Air India Express flight 812 attempted touch down was around the middle marker. (Conflicting) reports are that it overshot the runway, and that the pilot intended a go round (tapes reveal the co pilot was urging a go-round) but the plane hit the localizer antenna at the runway’s end, plowed through the perimeter losing part of a wing, and went down 75 feet into a ravine, and broke into pieces and burst into flames. On touchdown, there was a reported “bang” which may have been a tire bursting. A drizzle started after the accident. From 5 to 10 people have been hospitalized, but according to reports there are possibly 3 survivors.

    Survivor Abdul Puttur suffered burns. He was seated near the wing exit and said that the pilot had announced the landing, then there was a thud. He saw huge flames after the plane fell into the ravine and then he jumped out from the back entrance. Another passenger said the pilot made no announcement.

    The Serbian pilot was Zlatko Glusica, first officer was S.S. Ahluwalia.

    According to DGCA rules, Mangalore International Airport is deemed a “critical airfield” which means that “supervised take offs and landings” are prohibited. Only the captain (not the first officer) can pilot take-offs and landings. Mangalore International Airport has a controversial table top runway and which forces pilots to make a precision landing. The airport has no buffer zone, and pilots landing planes must fly precisely or risk hurtling off the edge.

    NTSB ISSUES UPDATE ON ITS INVESTIGATION OF FLIGHT 27 THAT DIVERTED TO DULLES AIRPORT

    In its continuing investigation of a fire aboard a Boeing
    757 that diverted to Dulles Airport (IAD) enroute to the Los
    Angeles International airport (LAX) from New York’s John F.
    Kennedy International airport (JFK), the National
    Transportation Safety Board has developed the following
    factual information:

    On Sunday, May 16, 2010, about 9:17 pm (EDT) the pilots on
    United Airlines flight 27, a Boeing 757, N510UA, noted a
    strong acrid smell and observed smoke from the Captain’s
    lower front windshield. The incident occurred about 30
    minutes into the flight while the aircraft was level at
    36,000 feet MSL. On board the aircraft were 7 crew members
    and 105 passengers.

    The Captain and First Officer reported that they donned
    their oxygen masks and smoke goggles immediately after
    observing the smoke and fire. The Captain then gave control
    of the airplane to the First Officer and discharged a halon
    fire extinguisher. The smoke and fire dissipated but then
    re-ignited. The Captain obtained a second bottle from the
    Purser. The fire remained extinguished after this second
    bottle was discharged. At approximately 500 feet MSL on
    final approach to Runway19L at IAD, the Captain’s windshield
    cracked. The landing was uneventful. The airplane cleared
    the runway, after which ARFF (Aircraft Rescue Firefighting)
    entered the aircraft to check for residual heat and fire.
    None was found and the airplane was towed to the gate for
    deplaning. There were no evacuation and no injuries to the
    flight crew or passengers.

    Preliminary examination of the cockpit area revealed that
    the inner pane of the Captain’s windshield had cracked. One
    of the five terminal blocks attached to the inside of the
    lower left windshield was consumed by fire and the portion
    of the wire harness associated with this terminal block was
    significantly damaged by fire. There was significant sooting
    and paint peeling to the left hand side of the windshield
    air frame support.

    The Captain’s windshield was moved and will be examined by
    Board investigators at the manufacturer.

    Two previous windshield fire events on B757-200 aircraft
    prompted the NTSB to issue Safety Recommendation A-07-50
    http://www.ntsb.gov/recs/letters/2007/A07_49_50.pdf. The
    Safety Board investigators will look closely at the
    recovered hardware to determine if this latest event is
    related.

    Qatar Airways Takes Delivery of Boeing 777 Freighter

    EVERETT, Wash., May 19 / — The first Boeing (NYSE: BA) 777 Freighter to enter Qatar Airways’ fleet completed a 16-hour flight from Boeing’s Everett, Wash., Delivery Center to Doha, Qatar, and has been placed into service. The airplane was delivered May 14.

    “The 777 Freighter will expand on the great track record that Qatar Airways’ 777 passenger airplanes have established,” said Marlin Dailey, vice president of Sales for Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “The airplane’s proven economics and efficiencies will provide Qatar, already a respected leader in the aviation industry, with a significant advantage in the air cargo market.”

    Qatar Airways ordered three 777 Freighters in May 2006, for deployment on Far East and European routes.

    The 777 Freighter’s entry into service has been very successful, with a dispatch reliability of 99.1 percent since entering service in February 2009. Qatar Airways’ 777 Freighter is the 23rd delivery overall.

    The 777 Freighter is the world’s longest-range twin-engine freighter and features the lowest trip cost of any large freighter. It features a payload capability of 225,200 pounds (102 metric tons), a range of 4,900 nautical miles (9,070 kilometers) and 10-foot (3.1-meter) interior height capability.

    The 777 Freighter is powered by General Electric’s GE90-110B1L/115BL and meets QC2 noise standards. Twelve customers have ordered a total of 73 777 Freighters.
    Qatar Airways currently operates 17 passenger 777s.

No mention of how the passengers were handled; but this is a known problem with the windshield heaters.

    Boeing Production Rate Increase

    SEATTLE, May 17 — Boeing (NYSE: BA) today announced that it will increase production rates on the Next-Generation 737 program to 34 airplanes per month in early 2012. The planned rate increase is aimed at satisfying continued strong demand for the Next-Generation 737. In addition, the company continues to study further potential 737 rate increases, given continued customer demand.

    “With over 5,200 sold to date, the Next-Generation 737 is the workhorse in our customers’ fleets around the world,” said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Jim Albaugh. “Even through the global economic downturn, our diverse 737 backlog has remained very strong. Increasing the 737 production rate is the right thing to do to meet the growth and fleet replacement needs of our customers.”
    The current production rate on the 737 program is 31.5 airplanes per month. Suppliers for the 737 program are prepared to support the rate increase. The production rate decision is not expected to have a material impact on 2010 financial results.

    “The global economy continues to recover this year and we believe that airlines will return to profitability in 2011,” said Randy Tinseth, vice president of Marketing for Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “We believe that there will be an increased demand for airplanes – especially in the market served by the Next-Generation 737 – in 2012 and beyond.”
    With more than 2,000 unfilled orders from more than 80 customers around the world, the Next-Generation 737 is the newest and most technologically advanced airplane in its class.     SEATTLE, May 13 — Boeing and two ANA (All Nippon Airways) pilots flew the Boeing 787 Dreamliner for the first time Wednesday. The airplane they flew is the first of six flight-test airplanes. The two-hour-and-40-minute flight took place over Washington state.

    Flying the 787 for the first time were ANA pilots Capt. Masayuki Ishii, director of 787 pre-operations planning, and Capt. Masami Tsukamoto, manager of 787 pre-operations pilots. On board were Capt. Mike Carriker, Boeing 787 chief test pilot, Capt. Christine Walsh and Scott Fancher, vice president and general manager of the 787 program, Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

    “The flight was a customer demonstration for our launch customer’s lead pilots to evaluate the 787,” said Fancher. “We are extremely proud to have ANA on the flight, and have the opportunity to show what a great airplane the men and women of Boeing have created.”

    The flight was conducted under a special airworthiness certificate granted by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration.

    The 787 program was launched in April 2004 with a record order of 50 787’s from ANA. ANA, which plays an active role as launch customer, is scheduled to take the first 787 delivery in the fourth quarter 2010.
    During the flight, both pilots performed multiple takeoffs and landings as well as other maneuvers that allowed them to feel the airplane’s characteristics. The pilots also gained experience with other 787 flight-deck features, including larger display screens, dual head-up displays and dual electronic flight bag.
    “It was fantastic and an incredible experience,” said Capt. Ishii. “ANA passengers are in for an incredible experience when they fly on the 787,” he said.
    “The flight was fantastic,” said Capt. Tsukamoto. “I’ve been waiting for this day since we made the launch order, and today my dream came true.”

    During the flight, Carriker showed the ANA pilots, who are both rated on the Boeing 777, the similarities and differences between the two airplanes. Pending regulator approval, it will take as few as five days of training for 777 pilots to become qualified as 787 pilots.

    Customers around the world have ordered 860 787s since the program was launched in April 2004, making the Dreamliner the fastest-selling new commercial jetliner in history.
