Boeing Production Rate Increase

SEATTLE, May 17 — Boeing (NYSE: BA) today announced that it will increase production rates on the Next-Generation 737 program to 34 airplanes per month in early 2012. The planned rate increase is aimed at satisfying continued strong demand for the Next-Generation 737. In addition, the company continues to study further potential 737 rate increases, given continued customer demand.

“With over 5,200 sold to date, the Next-Generation 737 is the workhorse in our customers’ fleets around the world,” said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Jim Albaugh. “Even through the global economic downturn, our diverse 737 backlog has remained very strong. Increasing the 737 production rate is the right thing to do to meet the growth and fleet replacement needs of our customers.”
The current production rate on the 737 program is 31.5 airplanes per month. Suppliers for the 737 program are prepared to support the rate increase. The production rate decision is not expected to have a material impact on 2010 financial results.

“The global economy continues to recover this year and we believe that airlines will return to profitability in 2011,” said Randy Tinseth, vice president of Marketing for Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “We believe that there will be an increased demand for airplanes – especially in the market served by the Next-Generation 737 – in 2012 and beyond.”
With more than 2,000 unfilled orders from more than 80 customers around the world, the Next-Generation 737 is the newest and most technologically advanced airplane in its class. Airfinance Journal’s investors’ and operators’ poll consistently ranks the Next-Generation 737 as the most preferred airplane in its class due to its wide market base, superior efficiency and lowest operating costs.

    Who: 228 passengers and 15 crew
    Why: While en route from Houston, a phone was found aboard. Pilots returned to Houston, where the flight underwent a security check.

    The flight landed safely in Paris after a five hour delay.

    TUI Airways Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Manchester

    TUI Airways flight BY-2677 made an emergency landing in Manchester, England, on January 20th.

    The Boeing 757-200 plane flying from La Palma, Spain, was on final approach to Manchester when the crew went around reporting an issue with the flaps.

    The plane subsequently landed safely. All two hundred and twenty-six people aboard remained unharmed.

    Southwest Airlines and AirTran Holdings Each Receive Antitrust Second Request

    DALLAS, Tex. and ORLANDO, Fla., Nov. 9, 2010 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ —
    Southwest Airlines Co. and AirTran Holdings, Inc. announced today that each received a request yesterday for additional information from the Antitrust Division of the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) in connection with Southwest’s previously announced proposed acquisition of AirTran. This action, often referred to as a “second request,” is a common part of the regulatory approval process under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act. Both parties are in the process of gathering information to respond to the second request and will continue to work cooperatively with the DOJ as it reviews the transaction. Completion of the transaction remains subject to the approval of AirTran stockholders, receipt of DOJ and any other necessary clearances, and fulfillment of customary closing conditions. While a definitive closing date cannot yet be determined, Southwest and AirTran maintain their expectation that the transaction will close in the first half of 2011.

    Transavia Plane Makes Hard Landing at Marrakesh Menara Airport

    Transavia flight HV-5753 made a hard landing at Marrakesh Menara Airport, Morocco, on October 10th.

    The Boeing 737-800 plane flying from Amsterdam, Netherlands, was on final approach to Marrakesh when the crew aborted the approach due to gusting winds.

    The plane subsequently positioned for another approach but touched down hard.

    No injuries were reported.

    Condor Flight Makes Emergency Landing at Shannon Airport

    CondorCondor flight DE-4156 had to make an emergency landing at Shannon Airport, Ireland, on March 19.

    The Boeing 767-300 was heading from Frankfurt, Germany to Cancun, Mexico, when a smoke alarm went off. The pilot then diverted the flight to Shannon Airport, where it made a safe emergency landing.

    All 238 people aboard remained unharmed.

    The airline arranged an alternate aircraft for passengers.

    Dreamliner Weather Testing

    787 Dreamliner Undergoing Extreme Weather Testing in Florida

    VALPARAISO, Fla., April 22 — The Boeing 787 Dreamliner has begun a series of extreme-weather tests at Valparaiso, Fla. A special hangar at the McKinley Climatic Laboratory at Eglin Air Force Base allows the airplane to experience heat as high as 115 degrees Fahrenheit (46 Celsius) and as low as minus 45 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 43 Celsius).

    After the airplane is stabilized at either the hot or cold temperatures, flight test technicians will follow the Airplane Maintenance Manual to perform the steps required to prepare the airplane for flight release and operate under these conditions. Sensors and monitors will allow the test team to determine if all systems hardware and software operate as expected.

    Cold-weather testing is being conducted first, with preliminary hot-weather testing to follow. Additional extreme-weather testing will be conducted later in the flight test program.

    “We have Dreamliner customers who will operate the 787 in a wide variety of environments throughout the world,” said Scott Fancher, vice president and general manager of the 787 program for Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “This testing is about ensuring that the airplane meets the expectations of our customers.”

    A crew of approximately 100 people traveled from Seattle to support the test operations on ZA003, the third 787 airplane to be built.

    The McKinley Climatic Laboratory is the second remote testing location for the 787 Dreamliner. The second airplane in the fleet, ZA002, performed a variety of tests in Victorville, Calif., last month. The testing in Florida is expected to last nearly two weeks.

    The 787 Dreamliner is an all-new twinjet designed to meet the needs of airlines around the world in providing nonstop service between mid-size cities with new levels of efficiency. The airplane will bring improved levels of comfort to passengers with larger windows, bigger baggage bins and advances in the cabin environment, including lower cabin altitude, higher humidity and cleaner air. Delivery of the first 787 is planned for the fourth quarter of 2010.

    Fifty-seven customers around the world have ordered 866 787s since the program was launched in April 2004, making the Dreamliner the fastest-selling new commercial jetliner in history. Delivery of the first 787 is planned for the fourth quarter of 2010.
