What: American Airlines McDonnell Douglas-80 en route from Chicago to Fort Myers FL

Why: When a fire was observed on the right about 3 feet (1 meter) from the fuselage, ATC moved the flight ahead of several other planes to land safely at Southwest Florida International Airport’s runway 6. Emergency crews were on standby; firemen and ATC saw neither flames nor smoke.


Southwest Airlines flight 118 had to divert and make an emergency landing in Amarillo, Texas, on March 18th.

Nordic Regional Airlines (Norra) flight AY-215 had to return and make an emergency landing in Helsinki, Finland, on April 1st.
