Why: SilkAir Flight 185, a Boeing 737-36N, was en route from Jakarta, Indonesia to Singapore, and crashed on 19 December 1997 after abruptly plunging into the Musi River from its 35,000 feet cruise altitude, killing all 97 passengers and 7 crew on board. For no apparent reason, minutes before the crash, the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder stopped recording, at different times, then the aircraft departed level flight and entered a steep vertical dive. All 104 people on board died in the crash. The pilot was deep in debt and had taken out an insurance policy on himself.
Delta Airlines flight DL-70 made an emergency landing in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Canada, on October 26th.
The Airbus A330-300 plane heading from Atlanta, Georgia, to Amsterdam, Netherlands, was diverted due to an engine performance issue.
The plane landed safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

The incident happened on July 25 after a passenger, identified as Ali Shahi, 25, allegedly started making threats regarding the security of the plane. The flight which was taking 183 passengers and 6 crew members from Toronto to Panama, was then turned back towards Toronto.
Two U.S. F16 fighter jets were sent from Toledo, Ohio, to escort the plane. The authorities confirmed that the plane safely landed at 8:55 a.m.
Armed officers removed the passenger from the plane. He was then taken into custody by Peel police while the plane was inspected.
Ali Shahi, who is an Canadian national, has been charged with Mischief interfering of the lawful enjoyment of property, Uttering threats, Mischief to property, Endangering the safety of an aircraft.
