    Why: The plane took off successfully but developed a bleed air problem in the left engine. The bleed air issue is more routine than problematic but dealing with it is certainly a best practice; the crew had to burn off fuel to land, and circled; but then diverted to LAX for the maintenance facilities. On arrival to LAX, passengers were booked onto alternative flights.

    American Airlines Flight Diverts to Boston due to Smoke in Cockpit

    American Airlines flight AA-4933 made an emergency landing in Boston, Massachusetts, on May 30th.

    The plane heading from Portland, Maine, to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was diverted after the crew noticed smoke in the cockpit.

    The plane landed safely. All passengers and crew members remained safe.

    Bhutan Air Flight Lands in Emergency at Kolkata

    A Royal Bhutan Airlines flight heading to Mumbai, India, from Paro, Bhutan, had to make an emergency landing at the NSC Bose International Airport, Kolkata at 9:30 a.m. on June 15.

    An official at NSC Bose International Airport said that the captain sought permission to make an emergency landing because the windshield of the aircraft cracked while the flight was underway.

    Airport authorities also confirmed that the plane landed safely and all passengers and crew remained unharmed.

    Frontier Airlines: 2 emergency landings in one day

    What: Lynx Aviation de Havilland Dash 8-400 (Frontier Airlines) flight en route from Fargo to Denver
    Where: Fargo Hector International Airport
    When: Aug 16th 2009
    Who: 74 passengers 5 crew
    Why: After a bird strike on take-off, the Frontier Airlines plane was cleared to return to the Fargo airport and repaired; but on the subsequent flight, the plane’s landing gear doors did not close after the gears were retracted on the initial climb, sending it back to maintenance.

    Air Canada Emergency Landing


    What: Air Canada A319 Airbus en route from Winnipeg to Toronto
    Where: Richardson International Airport Winnipeg
    When: Wednesday, November 5, 2008
    Who: 100 passengers
    Why: The crew smelled burning rubber and returned to the airport and had a safe landing.

    Alitalia Flight Rejects Takeoff From Seoul

    Alitalia flight AZ-759 had to reject takeoff from Seoul, South Korea, on February 1st.

    The Airbus A330-200 plane was accelerating to takeoff for Leonardo da Vinci International Airport, Italy, when the crew noticed an engine issue and rejected takeoff.

    The plane safely returned to the apron. Everyone aboard remained safe.
