    Bird-Hit Air India Flight Makes Safe Landing in Kolkata

    Air India flight AI-401 made a safe landing after a bird strike near Kolkata, India, on April 24th.

    The Boeing 787-800 plane flying from Delhi, India, was on approach to Kolkata when a bird hit it.

    The plane continued for a safe landing. All 254 people aboard remained unharmed.

    Airbus Instrument Failure Behind Emergency Landing in Greece

    What: Saudi Arabian Airlines Airbus A330-300 en route from Jeddah to Paris
    Where: Athens
    When: Jul 14 2011
    Who: 168 (?) 187 aboard
    Why: While en route, the Airbus experienced instrument failure. The pilot decided to divert to Greece.

    The pilot made an visual (ILS?) approach to Athens airport, with its instruments inoperable.

    The plane made a safe landing with no injuries reported. After maintenance went over the plane, it was back in the air within five or six hours.

    On July 12, a Saudi Arabian Airlines Boeing 777 en route from Washington to Riad made an emergency landing in Athens due to instruments indicating a fire in the luggage compartment. (No fire was found.) according to Thailand News Agency.

    What: Continental Airlines Boeing 737-700 en route from Newark to Boston
    Where: Newark Liberty Airport
    When: Jan 26, 2011
    Why: On take-off, the plane filled with smoke. The pilot announced that the smoke was due to de-icing procedures, and made an emergency landing in Newark. Weather conditions at the time included snow, and freezing temperatures.

    The plane made a safe landing with emergency services on standby.

    ATR 42–500 Makes Safe Landing at Tolmachevo after Gear Failure

    What: NordStar Airlines ATR 42–500
    Where: Tolmachevo Airport Russia
    When: Dec 5, 2012
    Who: 31 aboard 4 crew, 27 passengers
    Why: The press service of the West Siberian Transport Prosecutor’s Office reported a hard landing of the NordStar Airlines ATR 42–500.

    The plane had taken off normally but the gears would not retract. THe pilot informed ATC and returned to the airport where pilots made a safe landing (though reported as a “crash” landing.) No one was injured.

    The West Siberian Transport Prosecutor’s Office will be investigating.

    AirBridgeCargo Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing due to Flaps Problem

    AirBridgeCargo Airlines flight RU-523 made an emergency landing in Liege, Belgium, on January 12th.

    The Boeing 747-400 freighter plane flying from Moscow, Russia, was on final approach to Liege when the crew reported an issue with the flaps and went around.

    The plane subsequently landed safely at a higher than normal speed. Everyone aboard remained unharmed.

    United Airlines Flight Returns to Honolulu International Airport

    United airlinesUnited Airlines flight 396 had to return to Honolulu International Airport, Hawaii after 11 P.M. on July 6.

    The plane was heading towards San Francisco, California, when it had to return after sparks were seen coming out of one of the engines.

    The plane landed safely and everyone aboard remained unhurt.

    The passengers were accommodated in a replacement plane.
