    What: UT Air
    Where: 350 kms from Nizhnevartovsk, Russia
    When: July 2 2008
    Who: 9 fatalities, 13 aboard
    Why: The helicopter was on landing approach when according to witnesses, it caught fire and crashed. Apparently one of the black boxes survived and is being studied. The crew survived the crash.

    Ryanair Flat in Stansted

    What: Ryanair Boeing 737-800 en route from Dublin (Ireland) to Nice
    Where: Dublin
    When: Sep 4 2010
    Why: On takeoff, the flight blew a tire.

    The flight diverted to Stansted where they made a safe landing. A replacement jet was provided for passengers.

    Ground Crew Struck by Propeller

    What: Canadian North de Havilland Dash 8-100 en route from Cambridge Bay to Yellowknife
    Where: Yellowknife
    When: Feb 13th 2012
    Who: 17 aboard
    Why: After landing safely in Yellowknife, the plane was being directed from tarmac to parking. One engine had been shut down, and a ground crew member was struck by the right propeller.

    Emergency services were on hand.

    The injured party, who was a new hire, was flown by medical ambulance to Edmonton.

    In many cases, I say Maintenance, maintenance maintenance! but in this case, I say Caution, caution, caution! One can never be too careful. Perhaps a longer training period would be advisable?

    Ryanair Diverts to Brussels

    What: Ryanair Boeing 737-800 en route from Eindhoven to Ibiza
    Where: Paris
    When: May 15th 2012
    Why: The flight was en route over Paris when a problem developed, and the crew diverted to Brussels where they made a safe landing at Brussels South Charleroi Airport (BSCA).

    The plane will be examined to determine the nature of the problem. (We an only assume the rocking motion passengers complained of was not turbulence.)

    Lineas Aereas Suramericanas Plane Makes Emergency Landing in Bogota

    A Lineas Aereas Suramericanas plane had to return and make an emergency landing in Bogota, Colombia, on March 28th.

    The Boeing 727-200 plane took off for Leticia, Colombia, but had to return shortly afterwards due to a hydraulic failure.

    The plane landed safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

    Atlas Dreamliner Emergency Landing at Paine Field

    The Atlas Air Boeing 747 en route from Everett to Japan had taken off when the hydraulics failed. When the nose gear doors failed, pilots did a fly by and returned to the airport.

    The 747 is retrofitted to carry Dreamliner parts, and dubbed a “dreamlifter.”

    The flight departed from Paine Field at 3 pm.

    The flight made a safe landing.
