    Lufthansa Flight Makes Unscheduled Landing due to Medical Emergency

    LufthansaA medical emergency prompted the Lufthansa Airlines flight LH434 to make an emergency landing at Manchester airport, UK, on August 6.

    The incident happened when the flight was en route from Munich, Germany to Chicago.

    The Airbus A340-600 dumped fuel over Greater Manchester before landing safely at the airport shortly after 5 p.m.

    The sick passenger was taken to Wythenshawe Hospital for treatment. The nature of illness is not yet known.

    Saratov Airlines Flight Rejects Takeoff due to Engine Issue

    Saratov Airlines flight 6W-9532 had to reject takeoff from Saratov, Russia, on March 22nd.

    The plane was accelerating to takeoff for Surgut, Russia, when the crew received an engine indication and rejected takeoff.

    The plane safely returned to the apron. All one hundred and seven passengers and seven crew members remained unharmed.

    What: Yakutia Airlines Antonov AN-24 en route from Yakutsk to Olekminsk Russia
    Where: Yakutsk
    When: Feb 4 2010
    Who: 38 passengers and 4 crew
    Why: On takeoff, the left engine failed. The pilot aborted the takeoff, and with the gear retracted, the plane skid along the runway on its belly, incurring damage on its lower fuselage, left wing, propeller, and engine.

    Passengers evacuated with no injuries reported. The left engine was on fire though, but was successfully extinguished.

    Vueling Airlines Plane Intercepted by Czech Gripen Fighter Jets

    VuelingVueling Airlines flight VY-8549 was intercepted by two Czech Gripen fighter jets on May 27th.

    The Airbus A320-200, en-route from Helsinki, Finland, to Barcelona, Spain, was about to enter Czech Airspace, however, the crew did not establish contact with Czech Air Traffic Control. Two Gripen fighter jets were therefore dispatched that contacted the flight on emergency frequency.

    The communication was restored around 15 minutes after the plane entered Czech Airspace.

    What: Azul Linhas Aereas Brasileiras Embraer ERJ-190 en route from Navegantes,SC to Porto Alegre Brazil

    When: Jun 19th 2009
    Who: 100 passengers
    Why: On takeoff, the engine “exploded.”

    The left hand engine backfired or otherwise made some explosive sound, and the crew immediately aborted takeoff. Mechanics confirmed a compressor stall. Passengers boarded a replacement jet for their flight.

    What: Qantas Boeing 767-300 en route from Sydney to Melbourne I \
    Where: Sydney on
    When: Feb 1st 2010
    Who: 120 passengers
    Why: On takeoff, the Boeing 767’s tail scuffed the ground. The crew made a precautionary return to the airport for the plane to be inspected for damage and was cleared to continue the flight.
