    Southwest Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Baltimore

    Southwest Airlines flight WN-330 made an emergency landing in Baltimore, Maryland, on March 29th.

    The Boeing 737-700 plane flying from Raleigh–Durham International Airport, North Carolina, was on approach to Baltimore when the crew reported a landing gear issue.

    The plane landed safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

    Japan Airlines Plane Makes Emergency Landing at Tokyo Narita International Airport

    Japan Airlines flight JL-17 made an emergency landing at Narita International Airport, Japan, on January 29.

    The plane was flying from Vancouver, Canada, when the crew reported the failure of right hand engine and requested an emergency landing.

    The plane landed uneventfully. All 166 people aboard remained safe.

    AR National Guard C-130 Plane Makes Emergency Landing in Mississippi

    An Arkansas Air National Guard C-130 plane made an emergency landing at Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport, Mississippi, on June 6th.

    Authorities said the plane was on a training mission when it suffered an in-flight emergency, prompting the crew to turn around and land.

    The plane landed safely. Everyone aboard remained unharmed.

    Cessna Lands on Model Runway


    What: single-engine Cessna en route from North Carolina to Long Island NY
    Where: Heckscher State Park in East Islip, Long Island NY
    When: April 15, 2012, 4 pm
    Who: pilot and student
    Why: Pilot David J. Jensen and a student were in the single-engine Cessna when it developed engine problems. The pilots made a safe landing on a Heckscher State Park runway normally dedicated to model planes.

    The plane was not allowed to take off from that runway, and was dismantled for removal.

    The incident is under investigation.

    Australia: Near Miss

    Two planes that had a near miss avoided a collision by about 700 vertical feet were over Perth when one of the pilot’s collision collision alarm alerted him of the impending collision.

    Flight QF581 from Sydney to Perth had gotten permission from ATC to go from 38,000ft which put them on a collision course with incoming QF 576.

    Both planes swerved out of the way over Gulf St. Vincent.

    Qantas Airbus A330-200, flight QF-576 was en route from Perth,WA to Sydney,NS. Qantas Airbus A330-200 was from Sydney,NS to Perth,WA. ATC gave clearance to QF581 whose pilot had averted disaster by the time clearance was rescinded.

    The “loss of separation” incident is under investigation.

    According to the vice-president of the Australian and International Pilots Association, TCAS typically warns about 25 seconds out.

    * ACAS / TCAS (In-cockpit) TA alerts when there is a risk of collision in 40 seconds.
