    Helicopter Makes Emergency Landing on Football Field in Ghana

    HelicopterA helicopter made an emergency landing on a football field in Accra, Ghana, on December 2.

    Authorities said the helicopter was forced to land on the football field of the Abelemkpe Two Basic School due to a technical malfunction.

    The aircraft, owned by West African Helicopter, landed uneventfully and no injuries were reported.

    Lufthansa Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Spain

    Lufthansa flight LH-1825 had to return for an emergency landing in Bilbao, Spain, on February 27th.

    The Airbus A319-100 plane took off for Munich, Germany, but had to turn back due to a cargo door indication.

    The plane landed safely. There were 109 people aboard at the time; all of them remained unharmed.

    American Airlines Flight Diverts to Yakima

    What: American Airlines Boeing 737-800 en route from Seattle to Chicago
    Where: Yakima
    When: Oct 04 2010
    Who: 149 passengers and 6 crew, 1 ill passenger
    Why: When a passenger on the flight became ill, the flight diverted to Yakima, where the passenger was taken to Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital after a safe landing. The landing was uneventful except for brakes overheating.

    After a 7.5 hour delay, passengers were back en route.

    Pilot and Student Emergency Landing


    What: Sierra Academy of Aeronautics Cessna 152 en route from from Castle Airport in Atwater
    Where: Lambing Ranch to the south west of Turlock Lake east of Waterford
    When: flight left airport at 9:30 a.m. (Landing occurred 40 minutes into the lesson, and 10 miles from the nearest airport)
    Who: Instructor Ken Kwan and student pilot Daniel Yang
    Why: The engine quit at 2,000 feet and falling at 500 feet/minute; and there was smoke in the cockpit. The Instructor landed the plane with no engine power. There were no injuries. After mechanics examined the plane, authorities said the plane experienced “catastrophic engine failure” when a rod went flying through the engine block.

    Dana Air History Comes Out at Inquest

    While testifying at the coroner’s inquest before Lagos State Coroner Mr. Oyetade Komolafe, Tony Usidamen of Dana Air revealed that the Dana plane (registration number 5N-RAM) that crashed in Lagos in June 2012 had its engine replaced after a bird strike while outbound from Lagos on April 19, 2010.

    Records indicate 5N-RAM also had hydraulic leaks on May 23 at Murtala Mohammed Airport.

    On the June 3rd, the plane was making it’s third round trip and crashed close to it’s destination airport.

    The Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) investigator is Mr Emmanuel Dialla. His preliminary report said that the first sign of trouble came 17 minutes after the plane was airborne at 2.58pm, following a “non-normal” engine condition. According to the CVR at 1543:27 hours (3.43pm), the Captain informed the FO, “we just lost everything, we lost an engine. I lost both engines”…

    Airbus: Hard Landing in Portugal

    What: SATA International Airbus A310-300 en route from Lisbon to Ponta Delgada
    Where: Ponta Delgada, Portugal
    When: Nov 6th 2009
    Who: not available
    Why: The Airbus had a normal flight but a hard landing at Ponta Delgada. Passengers debarked and took an alternative Airbus to the final (Boston) leg of the trip.
