    Japan Airlines: Turbulence Injury

    What: JAL Japan Airlines Boeing 767-300 en route from Brisbane,QL Australia to Tokyo
    Where: Tokyo
    When: Nov 2nd 2009
    Who: 163 on board
    Why: During an episode of turbulence prior to landing, a South Korean passenger’s seatbelt came off, causing injury. Several others also were treated for injuries resulting from turbulence, although the “buckle” light was on, and passengers had been belted in. The airline contends that the passenger’s seatbelt had been improperly fastened.

    The South Korean passenger’s injury was treated at the hospital.

    Small Plane Crashes in Wisconsin; 2 Killed

    A small plane crashed in Peninsula State Park, Green Bay, Door County, Wisconsin, on September 18th.

    The Cessna 182 was carrying a pilot and a teenage flying student when it went down.

    Both people aboard were killed in the crash.

    The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

    American Airlines Flight Returns to Boston After Bird Strike

    American Airlines flight AA-2666 had to return and make an emergency landing in Boston, Massachusetts, on November 24th.

    The Boeing 737 MAX 8 plane took off for Miami, Florida, but had to turn back due to a bird strike.

    The plane landed back safely. All one hundred and seventy-two passengers and six crew members remained unharmed.

    NTSB TO OFFER TRAINING


    The National Transportation Safety Board is devoting two days at its Training Center to offer guidance to aviation public affairs professionals on how to most effectively manage emergency communications following a major aircraft accident or incident.

    The training will be offered on October 24-25, 2013, at the NTSB Training Center in Ashburn, Virginia, (near Washington, D.C.) and is aimed at communications professionals working with airports, airlines, air charter operators and corporations with aviation departments.

    NTSB specialists will explain the process by which investigation-related information is verified and released to the news media and the family members of those affected by a major accident.

    Members of the national news media will be there to discuss how they cover aviation accidents and how social media is changing how breaking news is disseminated and consumed. Aviation communications professionals will provide case studies highlighting best practices and lessons learned during previous aircraft incidents and accidents.

    Royal Air Maroc Loses Bird Encounter

    What: Royal Air Maroc Boeing 737-400 en route from Amsterdam to Nador
    Where: Amsterdam
    When: Jun 6th 2010
    Who: 156 passengers and 6 crew
    Why: On takeoff, the plane encountered a flock of geese, which resulted in an engine fire, damage to the left engine fan blade and denting the inlet. The engine was shut down, fire suppression engaged, and the crew returned to the airport where they made a safe landing. Passengers disembarked on the runway after less than a twenty minute flight.

    United Airlines Flight Rejects Takeoff From Phoenix

    United Airlines flight UA-1600 had to reject takeoff from Phoenix, Arizona, on June 29th.

    The Boeing 737-900 plane was accelerating to takeoff for Newark, New Jersey, when the crew noticed a mechanical issue and rejected takeoff.

    All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.
