    American Airlines Flight Diverts to Raleigh–Durham International Airport

    American Airlines flight AA-5355 had to divert and make an emergency landing at Raleigh–Durham International Airport, North Carolina, on August 11th.

    The plane heading from New Bern to Charlotte, North Carolina, was diverted due to engine issues.

    The plane landed safely. All fifty passengers and three crew members remained unharmed.

    Knives to Fly Planes On April 25


    Knives are back and flight attendants aren’t happy.

    The TSA ban on knives is due to be lifted on April 25. The blade can be no longer than 2.36 inches. The coalition of Flight Attendant Unions lobbied in Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, and Norfolk, Va, Chicago, Denver, Miami, New York LaGuardia, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Seattle, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Boston against the ban. The arguments are the same as those for and against guns. (If no one carries them, we’re safe.
    If everyone could carry them, we’d be armed against terrorists
    .) They are handing out leaflets urging fliers to contact Congress and to sign a petition to White House.

    The family of flight attendant Sara Low, who died on Sept 11, has written an open letter protesting the decision to allow knives back on commercial aircraft, and urging concern for safety and “doing no harm.”

    China Southern Airlines Emergency Landing

    What: China Southern Airlines Airbus A319-100 en route from Daqing to Guangzhou
    Where: Hangzhou
    When: Jul 25, 2012 4:50 p.m.
    Who: 105 passengers
    Why: The flight, scheduled from Daqing to Hangzhou to Guangzhou was climbing out of Hangzhou when smoke was reported.

    Pilots returned to Hangzhou and made a safe landing.

    China Southern Airlines’ official page said “an investigation later found the smoke was in fact a mist produced by faulty airconditioning system” according to CRIEnglish. Another jet was provided for passengers to complete their journey.

    British Airways Cargo Fire

    What: British Airways Boeing 777-200 en route from London to Tel Aviv
    Where: Brussels
    When: Nov 18th 2010
    Why: While en route, the crew received a fire alert. The flight diverted to Brussels a quarter of an hour after the alert occurred. A package was removed from the plane, and later returned to London where the cargo was transferred onto an alternative flight.

    American Airlines Flight Returns to Phoenix due to Smoke in Cabin

    American Airlines flight AA-9240 had to return and make an emergency landing in Phoenix, Arizona, on January 3rd.

    The Airbus A321-200 plane took off for John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York, but had to turn back due to smoke in the cabin.

    The plane landed back safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

    Hawaiian Airlines Plane makes Safe Landing in Hawaii after Mid-Air Turbulence

    Hawaiian AirlinesHawaiian Airlines flight HA-43 made a safe landing at Honolulu International Airport, Honolulu, Hawaii, on April 22nd.

    The Boeing 767-300, flying from San Jose, California, had just climbed out of runway when it encountered turbulence mid-air, but the crew decided to continue the flight to Honolulu.

    The plane landed safely.

    Four crew members received injuries due to turbulence.
