    Smoking Tiger Moth makes Emergency Landing at Jandakot

    What: private Tiger Moth
    Where: Jandakot Airport Australia

    Why: The flight was en route when smoke started coming from the engine. The smoke was seen at 10: 15.

    Shortly later, the pilot made a safe landing at Jandakot Airport Australia with four crews of emergency services standing by.

    The smoke seemed to originate from an oil leak.

    Virgin America Flight Returns to LAX due to Landing Gear Issues

    Virgin America flight VX-108 made an emergency landing at at Los Angeles International Airport, California, on February 18th.

    The Airbus A320-200 plane, heading from Los Angeles to Washington Dulles International Airport, had to return due to issue with retracting the landing gear.

    The plane landed uneventfully. All 110 passengers and crew members remained safe.

    The airline arranged a replacement plane for the passengers.

    Tragic Crash Kills Ontario Family

    What: Piper PA-28R-180 Cherokee Arrow en route from Kingston to Sudbury, Ontario
    Where: Devine Lake in Algonquin Park
    When: Saturday October 10
    Who: Pilot Kevin Houle, wife Lorraine Houle, granddaughter Emily and her boyfriend, Michael Rollins
    Why: It is speculated that the plane ran into weather as a distress call was heard from the plane, and the weather was rainy and icy at the time.

    The plane hit a tree and one of the wings was broken.

    The family was killed in the crash.

    The plane belonged to Kevin’s company, Tracks & Wheels Equipment Brokers. Kevin had been a pilot for a couple of years.

    Emirates A380 Diverts to Ottowa

    What: Emirates Airlines Airbus A380-800 en route from Dubai to Toronto
    Where: Ottowa
    When: Jun 1st 2012
    Who: 530 aboard
    Why: On approach to Toronto, the pilot entered a holding pattern due to bad weather, but on approach, was alerted to windshear, and made another precautionary go-round due to gusty conditions. They diverted to Ottowa where they made a safe landing. the plane touched down safely shortly after 5 p.m.

    The plane refueled, and made a safe landing in Toronto at Pearson after 9 pm.

    Pilots had declared (and undeclared) a fuel emergency on approach to Ottowa. After landing, the runway was inspected.

    Russia: Parachute Venture Fatal

    What: Technoavia SM-92T Turbo Finist
    Where: Korkino, 12km from Chelyabinsk Russia
    When: Dec 13 2009, 11:02 am
    Who: 8 on board
    Why: The SM-92T plane was carrying one pilot and seven parachutists. According to the MOE, the aircraft performed a U-turn, then began to lose altitude and crashed into the ground in Chelyabinsk. The crash occurred immediately after takeoff from Kalacheva Airport.

    All were fatalities.

    The GU Emergency Operations Group were on site in the recovery operation.

    AirTran Emergency Landing in St. Louis

    What: Airtran Boeing 717-200 en route from Bloomington,IL to Atlanta,GA
    Where: St. Louis
    When: Nov 12th 2009
    Who: 93 passengers, 5 crew
    Why: While en route, the plane developed problems in its left engine. The crew shut down the left engine and diverted to St. Louis for a safe landing.

    Passengers debarked, and were provided alternative transportation.
