Delta Emergency Landing in Great Falls Montana

What: Delta Boeing 757 en route from Atlanta to Seattle
Where: Great Falls International Airport
When: October 23, 2011, 12:30 pm
Who: 177 passengers, 1 emergency
Why: While en route, a passenger aboard flight 129 became unconscious.

The pilots diverted to Great Falls where they made an emergency landing, and delivered the passenger to an ambulance which took her to Benefits Health System, facilitated by the Montana Air National Guard Fire Department.

The flight took off again, promptly.

    False Cargo Fire Alarm in Bogota

    An American Airlines flight AA908, a Boeing 777-200 en route from Buenos Aires to Miami made an emergency landing in Bogota after a warning of a problem in the hold.

    There were 250 passengers aboard and 14 crew. No injuries were reported. The indicator was a false alarm.

    American Airlines sent a replacement flight from the Colombian capital yesterday, at 13.10 local time.

    Virgin Atlantic Plane Diverts to Iceland due to Indication of Engine Malfunction

    Virgin Atlantic flight VS-106 had to divert and make an emergency landing at Keflavík International Airport, Iceland, on July 29th.

    The Boeing 787-900 flying from Seattle, Washington, to London, England, had to divert after indications of an engine malfunction.

    The plane landed safely.

    Everyone aboard remained safe.

    FAA Issues Directive to Prevent Windshield Fires

    July 9–The FAA is issuing an Airworthiness Directive (AD) that requires operators of Boeing 757, 767, and 777 airplanes to either inspect or replace certain flight deck windows. The AD only affects the forward viewing windows, not the side windows.

    Operators have two options: Begin inspections within 500 flight hours and then continue at intervals that are specific for each of two window designs OR install a new, redesigned window. The inspection takes about an hour.

    The AD is aimed at preventing smoke, fire or cracking of the inner layer of the forward viewing window caused by loose electrical connections that are used to heat the window to prevent ice.

    Over the past two decades, there have been 11 reports of fire or flames on 757 (five events), 767 (three events), and 777 (three events) airplanes. Improper installation resulted in loose, improperly torqued or cross threaded screws that can contribute to overheating and arcing. The most recent incident was a May 16, 2010 emergency landing by a United 757 at Dulles International Airport.

    The FAA proposed the AD in March 2008. The agency received extensive comments and determined additional 757 service information was needed from Boeing. That in-depth review identified unique issues on the upper electrical connections on 757s which will be addressed in a separate AD so as not to hold up the fix for the lower electrical connector issue which constitutes the majority of the service problems identified to date. Although there have been no fire events on 747s, the FAA plans to propose an AD this fall since those later model airplane windows are similar.
    This AD affects 1,212 U.S. airplanes out of 2,619 worldwide. The estimated cost for the inspections is $103,020 total for U.S. operators. The window replacement is optional and would be an additional cost.

    Helicopter Carrying Pennsylvania National Guardsmen Makes Emergency Landing

    An Army National Guard helicopter was forced to make an emergency landing in a field near Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, on January 22.

    The Blackhawk helicopter was returning to Fort Indiantown Gap after a training flight when an engine chip warning light came on, forcing the pilots to land in emergency.

    There were 2 pilots and 1 crew members aboard at the time; all of them remained safe.

    LOT Polish Airlines Plane Returns to Illinois due to Engine Oil Leakage

    LOT Polish Airlines flight LO-4 had to return and make an emergency landing at O’Hare International Airport, Chicago, Illinois, on May 10th.

    The Boeing 787-800 flying yo Warsaw, Poland, had to return due to engine oil leakage.

    The plane landed safely.

    No one was injured.

    Asiana Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing due to Engine Fire Indication

    asianaAsiana Airlines flight OZ-521 had to divert and make an emergency landing in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, on December 5th.

    The Boeing 777-200 plane heading from Seoul, South Korea, to London, United Kingdom, was diverted due to an engine fire indication.

    The plane landed safely. All 199 people aboard remained unharmed.
