    UN Chopper Down in Monrovia with Injuries

    Impromptu landing in Thinkers Village in Monrovia.
    An RA 22426 United Nations helicopter carrying 5 health workers and 4 crew from Spriggs Payne Airport to River Gee, Fishtown made a forced landing when the pilot detected engine problems. Only the pilot and possibly a crew member sustained injuries; apparently they had deep cuts in their heads. The pilot was taken by ambulance to be hospitalized.

    The Mil Mi-8AMT was operated by UTAir.

    None of the health workers reported injury.

    The pilot warmed the engine from around 11: 30 to 11:50, then took off with passengers and landed twice with mechanical issues.

    During the forced landing/crash, the helicopter impacted a building under construction and another structure. Both were destroyed. The chopper’s right tire broke and the chopper’s front end sustained damaged. Liberia National Police and UNMIL Security responded to the scene and an investigation is underway.

    Medivac Emergency Landing


    What: Baptist Hospital Medivac helicopter en route from Memphis to Little Rock
    Where: St. Francis County at an intersection near Widener six miles east of Forrest City Arkansas
    When: 6:15 p.m. Saturday evening.
    Who: pilot and 2 nurses
    Why: The pilot indicated that a bird strike precipitated the emergency landing

    Small Plane Makes Emergency Landing in Florida

    A small plane made an emergency landing in Everglades in western Broward County, Florida, on March 16th.

    Authorities said the plane was carrying two people when it landed on a levee near Sawgrass Recreational Park, east of U.S. 27 and north of Interstate 75.

    Both occupants of the plane remained uninjured.

    The cause of emergency landing is being investigated.

    18 Dead or Missing in Newfoundland Helicopter Crash

    What: Cougar Helicopter’ Sikorsky Helibus (twin-turboshaft) en route to offshore Hibernia oil field to bring down two passengers and 14 were going to the Sea Rose oil platform
    Where: off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, in the Atlantic.
    When: Thursday morning March 12
    Who: 18 people aboard
    Why: At 9:15 a.m., the Sikorsky pilot sent an SOS to Gander Newfoundland air traffic controllers. After the mayday, the helicopter ditched in the Atlantic. Two people were sighted but only one was recovered. Robert Decker, has been transported to St. John’s hospital. Searchers received signals from survival suits equipped with water-activiated locator beacons and integrated life vests.

    The search has been hampered by a gale force warning. Visibility is 10 nautical miles.

    Couger, Husky Energy and ExxonMobile have made statements to the press. The Hibernia oil platform is owned by ExxonMobil Canada, Chevron Canada Resources, Petro-Canada, Canada Hibernia Holding Corporation, Murphy Oil and StatoilHydro Canada Ltd.

    The SeaRose oil platform in the White Rose oil and gas field is operated by Husky Energy and Petro-Canada.

    Helicopter Crash off the Coast of Brazil

    On March 27, 2013, a Líder Táxi Aéreo Bell 412SP was en route from Rio de Janeiro to an oil platform (Petrobras P-7 rig) with three people aboard when it made an emergency landing near an oil platform Bacia de Campos Brazil.

    Líder Táxi Aéreo and Petrobras say it was a controlled landing.

    The three crew were able to use a lifeboat.

    The helicopter’s flotation device was activated and the chopper floated to the surface but capsized.

    The owner of the helicopter made this statement:
    The aircraft performed a controlled landing in the water near the platform Petrobras P-7. The three occupants of the aircraft were immediately rescued and are doing fine. The freighter Petrobras, with the technical leader, are already providing the withdrawal of aircraft and general cargo. All measures of investigation are ongoing and all bodies were triggered. We reiterate that all safety procedures, maintenance and training are up to date and used properly.

    Petrobras reported the incident to the (Brazilian) ANP, Navy and Air Force who will be investigating.

    SIAI-Marchetti Crashes at Sea, 2 Pilots Lost

    What: Philippine Air Force Siai-Marchetti AS-211 Warrior
    Where: Banawang village near the Stela Mariz Beach resort, Philippines
    When: April 28 2011
    Who: 2 pilots
    Why: After taking off from Basa Air Base (Clark Field in Pampanga) on a routine flight, the Aermacchi S-211 trainer jet crashed near the beach.

    Initially reports said there was one person aboard, but later reports say there were two who both died in the crash. One body has been retrieved, and divers are searching for one of the pilots who is missing. The condition of the plane is described as “vaporized” and “disintegrated.” Pieces of the plane, and what can be found of the bodies are being recovered for the examination, and local witnesses are being interviewed about what they saw.

    The fatalities were Maj. Ephraim Gatus Suyom and Juan de Leon.
