2.5 Billion Gallons of Jet Fuel Saved and Counting…

SEATTLE, Feb. 9, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Aviation Partners, Inc. and Aviation Partners Boeing announced today that as of February 9, 2011 at 4:47AM P.S.T. their unique Blended Winglet* Technology has saved the world’s airlines and private jet operators 2.5 Billion gallons of jet fuel, or about 5 Billion U.S. dollars. This represents a global reduction in CO2 emissions of almost 26 Million tons. Aviation Partners Winglet Technology is now flying on more than 4,000 airplanes and 21 different models.

Joe Clark, Chairman and CEO of Aviation Partners, and John Reimers, CEO of Aviation Partners Boeing, both agreed the fuel savings are significant and this number will climb exponentially to more than 7 Billion gallons within the next five years.

Clark said, “We are very proud of this achievement and excited that we are ahead of the curve in energy conservation.” This technology is being delivered to the world’s airlines and private jet operators at a rate of over 500 aircraft per year.

    Boeing, Copa Airlines Complete Order for 22 Next-Generation 737s

    WASHINGTON, Nov. 30, 2010–Boeing (NYSE: BA) and Copa Airlines today announced an order for 22 Next-Generation 737-800s at a signing ceremony at the U.S. Department of Commerce in Washington, D.C. The order previously was attributed to an unidentified customer on Boeing’s orders and deliveries website.

    The 22 firm airplanes are valued at approximately $1.7 billion at list prices and nearly double Copa’s existing Next-Generation 737 fleet. The order is the largest new aircraft order in Copa Airlines’ history and is part of the airlines’ plan to continue to grow its fleet to meet market demands for new-generation, more fuel-efficient airplanes.

    “Today’s signing not only celebrates the strong relationship between Boeing and Copa Airlines, but also symbolizes the strong political and commercial ties between the United States and Panama,” Albaugh said.

    The new airplanes will be outfitted with the 737 Boeing Sky Interior featuring new modern sculpted sidewalls and window reveals that provide passengers with a greater connection to the flying experience. They also will benefit from performance improvements expected to result in a 2 percent reduction in fuel consumption through a combination of airframe and engine improvements. The performance improvements will be delivered beginning in mid-2011 through early 2012.

    Operating out of the “Hub of the Americas” in Panama City, Copa provides service to 46 destinations in 24 countries.

    In the past two years, Copa has purchased 37 Next-Generation 737-800s new from Boeing and entered into leasing agreements for an additional 10.

    kulula.com Plane Diverts to Johannesburg due to Bird Ingestion

    Kulula.comkulula.com flight MN-483 had to divert and make an emergency landing at O. R. Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg, South Africa, on February 7.

    The Boeing 737-800, flying in South Africa, from Lanseria to Cape Town, had to divert after one of its engines ingested a bird, thus damaging its fan blades.

    The plane landed safely.

    No injuries were reported.

    Dubai Investigation Continuing. Cargo Under Scrutiny

    General Civil Aviation Authority released a report that the black boxes indicated smoke or fire on the main deck and “lower aft cargo compartment” towards the back of the doomed aircraft. The GCAA says investigators are still uncertain of the causes of the crash. Capt Doug Lampe and First Officer Matthew Bell, reported smoke in the cockpit 28 minutes after taking off. UPS Flight 6 was unable to change radio frequency and could not communicate with ATC. During their descent, pilots had difficulty seeing the flight instruments because of thick smoke.

    The memorial service for captain Doug Lampe will be held at two o’clock on Monday at Southeast Christian Church, Louisville.

    Ryanair Flight Returns to Malta due to Landing Gear Problem

    Ryanair flight FR-3775 had to return and make an emergency landing at Malta International Airport, Malta, on October 12th.

    The Boeing 737-800 plane took off for Bristol, England, but had to turn back after the crew noticed problems with the landing gear.

    The plane landed back safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

    American Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Miami

    American Airlines flight AA-1429 made an emergency landing in Miami, Florida, on December 24th.

    The Boeing 737-800 plane took off for Managua, Nicaragua, but had to turn back after the crew received a door open indication.

    The plane landed back safely. All one hundred and sixty-eight people aboard remained unharmed.

    US Airways Diverts to Gander

    What: US Airways Boeing 757-200 en route from Dublin to Charlotte
    Where: Gander
    When: May 8th 2012
    Why: After taking off from Dublin, one of the engines developed a situation not unlike a stuck carburetor.

    Pilots troubleshooted (troubleshot?) the problem but then shut down the engine and diverted to diverted to Gander, where they made a safe landing.

    The mechanical repair was performed. (The issue was mechanical, not digital.) Meanwhile, a replacement flight was provided to transport the passengers to Charlotte.
